Canterbury coach Cameron Ciraldo is refusing to confirm media reports that one of his players has walked out on the NRL club after allegedly being punished for arriving late for training.
- There are reports a player was forced to wrestle with teammates as a form of punishment
- Ciraldo says he has not been made aware of any players being disgruntled with their workload
- He is in his first year as Bulldogs NRL coach
The Daily Telegraph and The Sydney Morning Herald have reported the player was allegedly forced to wrestle with up to a dozen players as a form of punishment.
The player, who has not been named, believed he was not late to training, according to The Daily Telegraph.
He reportedly asked the Bulldogs for time off due to personal reasons and has not returned to training.
The Rugby League Players' Association is aware of the situation and the player has not featured for the club at NRL level in several weeks.
Ciraldo spoke to the media on Wednesday morning but would not be drawn on the reports the player had left the club.
"It's a pretty sensitive issue, I won't be commentating on that one," he said.
"There's a lot of people doing a lot of hard work here and the players are getting better with the training as the year's gone on.
"Some guys have exceeded our expectations but to comment on every player's attitude, I wouldn't be able to do that."
Ciraldo said he had not been made aware of any players being disgruntled with the training load he had introduced.
"We've got a leadership group that we meet with every week and you'd like to think if there was some unrest that those guys would have brought it up," he said.
Ciraldo said he would not back down from enforcing a training load on his players that he hoped would turn the club into a premiership contender.
"It's the NRL, nothing comes without hard work," he said.
"This club is built on hard work and work ethic. That's what drew me to this club and that's what we're trying to install back into this place."
Ciraldo has endured a challenging season in his first year as Bulldogs head coach.
The Bulldogs are 15th on the ladder heading into the final round, having produced a 7-16 win-loss record from their 23 matches.
Ciraldo was a high-profile signing for the Bulldogs after he was a senior assistant to Penrith's two-time premiership coach Ivan Cleary.
The Bulldogs finish their season against Gold Coast in Robina on Sunday.
They have not reached the finals since 2016.
