Australian Alex de Minaur has moved into the second round of the US Open after victory on Wednesday morning AEST.
- Alex de Minaur is the 13th seed in the men's singles draw at the US Open
- He needed four sets to defeat Timofey Skatov in the first round
- De Minaur's best finish at the US Open was in 2020, when he made the quarterfinal
De Minaur, the 13th seed at this year's US Open, needed two hours and 41 minutes to defeat Kazakhstan qualifier Timofey Skatov 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
The Australian's solid serve game set up his four-set victory, but it was not flawless.
After reeling off four straight games to close out the opening set, de Minaur's service game faltered in the second.
He gave up three breaks of serve in the second, giving the Kazakh belief as he levelled the match.
But de Minaur firmly took control of the third set, winning six consecutive games to take the lead.
An early break in the fourth set looked to have de Minaur on the verge of victory, but Skatov broke back in the ninth game as the Australian was serving for the match.
The Kazakh was able to level the set at 5-5, but de Minaur was able to regroup and win the final two games to take out the match.
De Minaur, a quarterfinalist at the US Open in 2020, has had good form leading into the last grand slam of the year.
He was runner-up at the Canadian Open in August, with victories over Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz and Cameron Norrie.
De Minaur will face Chinese player Yibing Wu in the next round.
