Each match became appointment viewing, with the Matildas’ semi-final against England becoming one of the most watched free-to-air broadcasts of all time. An astonishing 7.13 million people watched it on Seven and 7Plus, and that estimate doesn’t include clubs, pubs and other public spaces or those who turned to Optus Sport.
Meanwhile, the quarter-final win over France, sealed in a dramatic penalty shootout, was viewed by a national audience of 4.9 million Australians according to VOZ figures, ratings agency OzTAM’s new measurement system.
