Residents and holidaymakers on the state’s South Coast will have a nervous wait tonight to see if a wind change, which is expected about 2am, will either subdue or refuel the Coolagolite fire.
For now, an emergency warning is still in place for Cuttagee, Barragga Bay, Murrah, Bunga and Goalen Head areas.
However, if that southerly wind change does come through, the fire could be pushed north to put popular holiday spot Bermagui on high alert.
“People in Bermagui who do not feel adequately prepared to defend their properties should consider relocating to a safer place such as Bega or Narooma before nightfall,” the NSW RFS warned on Tuesday night.
Crews also have concerns for Wapego, where embers are causing a number of spot fires.
In total, the Coolagolite fire has already managed to burn through about 5800 hectares since it began just after 12pm on Tuesday.
All other fires are currently sitting at ‘advice’ level, including the Abernethy fire which put the Cessnock region on high alert earlier on Tuesday.
As for Sydney, the city can expected tops of 29 degrees on Wednesday, but some showers are expected in the afternoon to bring some reprieve.
As strong winds continue across the state, a hazardous surf warning has also been issued for the Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast for Wednesday.
Total fire bans are also in place for the Northern Slopes, North Western, and Greater Hunter for Wednesday.
The NSW SES has also put the state’s south -in the Riverina region - on high alert with moderate flooding and wind gusts forecast.
As far as records went from our Tuesday, temperatures hit a top of 37.2 degrees at Sydney Airport while the city’s main weather station Observatory Hill reached 35.7 degrees to beat Sunday’s maximum of 35.6.
Penrith, Gosford and Nowra also all cracked 35 degrees.
That’s all for our live Tuesday coverage. Keep an eye on the website on Wednesday for the latest bushfire news.
