It's that time of year again, when all attention in the motor sports world switches to Mount Panorama for the Bathurst 1000.

This year marks 60 years since the inaugural edition of the race on the famous mountain circuit.

In that time there have superstars of the sport and novices who have all made their mark, and there have been memorable storylines aplenty.

Look back at some of the most famous — and infamous — moments from the last six decades at Bathurst.

1992: Race ends in carnage as Jim Richards goes off at angry fans

Weather can play havoc with the Great Race at any stage, but especially when it comes in the closing laps.

That was certainly the case in 1992, when storms moved through from Orange to Bathurst later on Sunday afternoon.

Cars were coming in trying to change tyres in the wet, but as the rain got heavier things got dangerous on top of the mountain with just under 20 laps left.

Cars were losing grip and crashing left right and centre, particularly in the spot between Forrest Elbow and Conrod Straight.

Jim Richards and Mark Skaife were leading in the Skyline Nissan car, but they were caught on slick tyres — Richards hit the wall somewhere up the top, and then with one tyre hanging off began going slowly down the mountain.

He had little chance of rescuing things once he started aquaplaning, and as fans and commentators looked on, he skidded into the wall and then slid down the hill to three already crashed cars and collided with them.

Other cars joined them as officials red-flagged the race with Richards and Skaife on their 145th lap out of 161.
