Portugal has secured a famous 24-23 Rugby World Cup victory over Fiji, but it was not enough to save the Wallabies, who have crashed out of the tournament.
The Wallabies needed a miracle to progress to the knockout rounds, requiring Portugal to beat Fiji and deny their Pacific rivals a losing bonus point.
And although Os Lobos completed the first part of that bargain, their narrow victory still handed Fiji the losing bonus point they needed to scrape into the quarterfinals for the third time in their history.
"It's incredible. It's unbelievable, they always find resources I never expect," departing head coach Patrice Lagisquet said.
"The way they could score, it's amazing. Even if we work a lot to be able to do things like that, they still surprise me after four years.
"It is an incredible group, an incredible team and they are players who are really talented."
A cagey but thoroughly entertaining first half saw the two teams enter the sheds locked at 3-3, but Portugal burst the game open in the second half when Raffaele Sorti crossed for the opening try of the game.
Rodrigo Marta launched another attack soon after as Portugal looked to push their advantage, but Sireli Mawqala's stunning counterattack resulted in Levani Botia levelling the scores once again.
Botia was then sent to the sin bin for a high tackle and Portugal made their extra man advantage count, Francisco Fernandes burrowing over.
Fiji hit back again through replacement prop Mesaka Doge, before two Frank Lomani penalties gave Fiji a 23-17 lead heading into the final minutes.
However, Marta sent the crowd wild with a final-minute score to bring Os Lobos to within a point and, on the same ground where a last-gasp penalty against Georgia fell agonisingly wide, Samuel Marque nailed the sideline conversion to hand Portugal a famous win.
"I think it's the best moment of my life," player of the match Nicolas Martins said post-match after Portugal celebrated with their multitude of supporters.
Fiji will play England in the quarterfinals in Marseille next week, but that achievement was overshadowed by the joyous scenes among the Portugal players and supporters at full time.
"Congratulations to Portugal, hats off to them, they really played well today," Waisea Nayacevelu said.
"We didn't execute a lot of our plays, dropped a lot of balls and they took advantage of our mistakes.
"I salute them and congratulate them on the win.
"For us, we've got to go back and look at our mistakes and our work-ons.
"But we've qualified now and we have to switch our focus now on to next week."
Pool winners Wales will take on Argentina in the other quarterfinal from this side of the draw after they beat Japan 39-27 in their final pool match.
Ireland will meet New Zealand and France will take on South Africa in the other quarterfinal matchups.
Look back on how all the action unfolded in our live blog.
Wrapping things up
That's where we'll end our coverage tonight.
Thank you so much for joining us on a night that was ultimately disappointing for the Wallabies (and Fijians) but exceptionally good for Portuguese rugby.
Huge congratulations to Portugal - and congratulations to Fiji as well.
We'll have all the coverage from the rest of the tournament on the ABC Sport website, but for now, it's good morning from me.
Quarterfinals confirmed
The quarterfinals are now set in stone, with two mouthwatering match ups on one side of the draw and two equally intriguing contests on the other.
QF1 - Wales vs Argentina - Stade de Marseille QF2 - Ireland vs New Zealand - Stade de France, Saint Denis
QF3 - England vs Fiji - Stade de Marseille QF4 - France vs South Africa - Stade de France, Saint Denis
Good news of sorts though - the Wallabies have qualified automatically for the next World Cup in 2027 by finishing third in the group - so that's something.
'We have got to reassess': Fiji looking forward
Fiji head coach Simon Raiwalui does not look like a man who has just led his side to the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup.
"Congratulations to Portugal they stuck in there. They stuck in and got the try at the end, full credit to them," he says.
"Disappointed to not get that win, we were a bit tired in terms of context of the game, but Portugal can enjoy tonight."
As for Fiji, some urgent reassessment is required after two lacklustre displays against Georgia and Portugal ahead of a crunch quarterfinal with England next week.
"We have got to reassess tomorrow and recover, they are a very good tournament team England - but we will review it first."
'Today we showed the world we can compete and win'
José Lima, the captain of Portugal today says that the result was a huge moment in Portuguese rugby.
"Of course you can see our fans," he says.
"Our team deserve that victory so much.
"I think today we showed the world we can compete and win at this level."
He says that despite the team being tired after their efforts over the past month, they always believed.
"I think it comes from the heart when you are tired, you have to think of all the stuff before.
"That's what we said at half-time and look at this, it is unbelievable."
The picture of a quarterfinal team
Not much joy on the faces of the Fijians at the moment.
And no wonder.
They were second best today.
Can they get themselves up to face England in a week's time?
Incredible scenes
Rugby union will not be overtaking football in Portugal any time soon, but these scenes are extraordinary.
Joyous scenes in Toulouse
The Portugal fans are singing.
The Portugal players are crying.
Incredible scenes.
The Portugal coach has just been speaking - he says simply that his players have "surprised" him and "I love them" when asked about the fans.
'It is the best moment of my life': Martins
Portugal's Nicolas Martins is speaking.
"I feel incredible," he says.
"We worked a lot for that I have no words to say.
"It is historic I am so happy, it is the best moment of my life.
"We are a team of friends, but we live together - it is incredible.
"Fiji played well, but all this ... I do not have the words."
Wallabies are out of the Rugby World Cup
PORTUGAL SECURE A FAMOUS VICTORY
They've done it! Delirium in the stands! Euphoria on the pitch!
This is magical!
Portugal have deserved this win - they have lit up this Rugby World Cup and have come away as the most impressive of all the lower-ranked nations.
The 24-23 victory is not enough for the Wallabies - they are still out of the competition as Fiji earn a losing bonus point.
But tonight is all about Portugal.
78' PORTUGAL SCORE A LATE TRY!
Brilliant from Portugal!
Patience - excellent hands - Portugal have burst through eventually down the left.
Raffaele Storti made the break down the blindside and then Rodrigo Marta finished it off!
Portugal have a kick to win it!
It's from the sideline. Samuel Marques the scrumhalf is lining it up.
HE KICKS IT!
PORTUGAL LEADS 24-23!
75' Penalty Fiji
Hands in the ruck from the Portuguese - a little slap from Frank Lomani showing his frustration.
I think Lomani is going to try and extend the lead off the kicking tee here.
The ball is 42 metres out, bang in front and he nails it!
Fiji lead 23-17!
Mike Tadjer leaves the field to a standing ovation
My player of the match today - he's been brilliant.
73' Fiji penalty
Portugal have been pinged for being offside.
This is now a very kickable penalty just to the left of the uprights and that's the option that Fiji wil take.
Frank Lomani will line up the kick.
And he gets it!
Fiji hit the front for the first time in the match, leading 20-17.
71' Fiji bring the power, Portugal the flair
Portugal look like they are going to launch an assault on the Fijian 22 with some lovely hands.
But they lose the ball and Fiji go route one up the middle with some bulldozing runs down the centre of the park to break into the Portugal 22.
Fiji then kick wide to the runners but the ball is taken out of the sideline.
Portugal have the lineout and clear their lines.
68' Fiji score!
The pressure eventually told!
It's the replacement Mesake Doge who gets the ball down - eventually - despite the best efforts of a massed Portuguese defence.
The kick is important - and it's good!
Fiji are back on level terms at 17-17.
67' Penalty Fiji
Portugal closed off the ball - or attempted to at the ruck - so Fiji have a penalty and they kick for touch.
The lineout is good 10 metres out and the maul is established.
This is the concern...
There's probably no good result for Australia here, we've either collapsed in a heap and not made the quarters or we make the quarters and the underlying problems we have drag on for another 4 years
- Andrew
65' Fiji scrum
A clearing kick from Fiji has crashed into the sky-camera cable - so Fiji will have a scrum.
A similar incident helped England get out of jail against Samoa yesterday - but this seems less consequential at the moment.
Meanwhile, Manuel Cardoso Pinto is down and grimacing, he's going to limp off and he replaced by Vincent Pinto.
63' Penalty Fiji
It was loose, untidy and Fiji have come up with the field position, just outside the 22 as Portugal are pinged for offside.
Portugal lost the ball first, Fiji broke down field, kicked ahead, Portugal spun the ball brilliantly to the left but were then denied a kick forward by a brilliant tackle, Fiji came back and won the penalty.
Fiji have a lineout - AND THEY LOSE IT! PORTUGAL CLEAR!
