A Dutch chess player says she was fined for wearing sneakers that the International Chess Federation deemed "sports shoes".
Anna-Maja Kazarian, 23, was at the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in Uzbekistan when she says she was stopped by an official.
"I was approached by one of the arbiters and they told me that my shoes are strange shoes, they look like sports shoes," she said in a YouTube video.
"I barely ever wear them because they are fancy and they're not everyday type of shoes."
Ms Kazarian said she was given an official warning and fined 100 euros ($161) by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
The arbiter asked Ms Kazarian to change the shoes, she said, but she did not have any alternatives with her.
"I also made the argument that these are not sports shoes."
She said the experience had made her feel "demoralised" and "embarrassed" after being forced to change into heels.
"I hope FIDE is happy now. I’m absolutely devastated. The way that this was handled is not okay," she said.
The International Chess Federation has been approached for comment.
