The big cold has well and truly hit the in the USA, and its caused havoc in the opening week of the NFL playoffs.

One game has been delayed, one game has made it into the top four for the coldest games in history, and one game saw a 22-year-old quarterback set a new record in a match where he beat a quarterback 17 years his senior.

Oh, and Taylor Swift showed up.

Here's five quick hits from the opening day of action.

1. Dangerous snowstorm sees Bills match postponed

A potentially dangerous snowstorm that hit the Buffalo region on Sunday morning (AEDT) led the NFL to push back the Bills' wildcard playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

New York governor Kathy Hochul and the NFL cited public safety concerns for the postponement, with up to half a metre of snow projected to fall on the region during a 24-hour period.

Heavy snow began falling by midafternoon, accompanied by strong wind, and the Bills posted a video on social media of whiteout conditions at Highmark Stadium.

While it appears the field is flooded in the video above, we're reliably informed it's snow on top of a tarp that's making it look like water.

"We want our Bills to win, but we don't want 60,000 to 70,000 people travelling to the football game in what's going to be horrible conditions," Erie County executive Mark Poloncarz said at a news conference in the Buffalo suburbs.

Officials advised residents to stay off the roads starting at nightfall, with a driving ban taking effect at 9pm.

The game will now be played at 8.30am on Tuesday.

2. Big cold hits Kansas and gives Miami a frosty wake up call

Speaking of the weather, the Miami Dolphins were taken well out of their warm climate comfort zone as they headed to Kansas to play in the fourth-coldest game in NFL history.

The temperature for the wildcard playoff game was -20C, with wind gusts that made it feel more like -27C.

The coldest game in league history remains -25C for the 1967 NFL championship, when the Packers beat the Cowboys at Lambeau Field in a game that came to be known as the Ice Bowl. The wind chill that day was -44C.

"You can’t prepare for a game like that with that kind of weather," said Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who grew up in Hawaii and played his college football in the relative warmth of Alabama.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid was a little more blunt about it all.

"Cold's cold. For you, me — it's cold," he said.

"But you go do your thing. That's how you go play."

3. Stroud torches the Browns to set new NFL record

Rookie CJ Stroud became the youngest quarterback to win a playoff game after throwing for 274 yards and three touchdowns, and the Houston Texans returned two interceptions by Joe Flacco for scores in a 45-14 rout of the Cleveland Browns in their wildcard clash.

Stroud, the second overall pick in the draft last April, is also the highest-drafted rookie QB to win in the post season. He picked apart Cleveland's vaunted defence, throwing touchdown passes to Nico Collins, Brevin Jordan and Dalton Schultz.

At 22 years and 102 days old, Stroud passed Michael Vick, who was 22 years, 192 days old in 2002 when his Falcons beat the Packers.

Flacco, who turns 39 in three days, came off the couch to go 4-1 as a starter to end the regular season and lead the Browns (11-7) to just their third playoff appearance since their 1999 expansion rebirth, but second in four seasons under coach Kevin Stefanski.

Playing in his 17th post-season game but first in nine years, Flacco couldn't continue his magical run under the bright lights of the playoffs.

He finished with 307 yards and had a touchdown pass in the first half, but his mistakes under pressure in the third quarter were too much for the Browns to overcome on a day when Stroud easily outshined him in his playoff debut.

4. Stafford coming home to Detroit as the 'bad guy'

With wide receiving Miami superstar Tyreek Hill returning to Kansas and scoring a touchdown, the attention now turns to Los Angeles quarterback Matthew Stafford coming home to Detroit to end the Lions' dream of making their first Super Bowl.

Stafford spent 11 seasons at the perennially underperforming Lions after being taken as the first pick in 2009 draft, before joining the Rams in 2021 and subsequently winning the Super Bowl in his first season away from Detroit.

"I'm not expecting anything, to be honest with you," Stafford said when asked about his return.

"I was asked this question a couple times just by friends and family, and I think the biggest thing for me is just to go and experience whatever that experience is gonna be.

"I understand what the people of Detroit and the city of Detroit meant to me in my time and my career, what they meant to my family. I hope they feel that back, but at the same time I'm not a stranger to the situation and understanding that I'm the bad guy coming to town."

Stafford won't be the only one going up against his old chargers on Monday, with former Packers coach Mike McCarthy plotting the demise on the resurgent Green Bay when his Cowboys host their wild card clash at 8.30am on Monday (AEDT).

McCarthy is Green Bay's last Super Bowl winning coach, having claimed victory in 2011 when Aaron Rodgers was a fresh face in the role of quarterback.

On Tuesday, the Steelers will play their delayed game against the Bills, while the Buccaneers will play the Eagles to round out the action.

5. Taylor Swift wears a cute jacket

Alright, we know why you're really here.

Nobody cares about the football right? Sport is just a sideshow to the main event of Taylor Swift getting about in a cute jacket.

We get it. Even the NFL's social media accounts appear to only really care about what Taylor is up to at any given moment.

So here it is. Taylor's cool jacket.

It was made by Kristin Juszczyk, who is married to San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

It has the the number 87 on it, which is what Taylor's partner Travis Kelce wears. It looks warm. It's red.

That's all we've got.

Hopefully that's enough and we never hear of it again.
