Daniil Medvedev has pulled off one of the great Australian Open comebacks, coming from two sets down to win a titanic struggle that finished after 3:30am.
Medvedev triumphed over Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori 3-6, 6-7(1/7), 6-4, 7-6(7/1), 6-0, in a match that lasted four hours and 23 minutes, and finished well after 3:30am local time.
The grand slam winner looked destined for an early exit at Melbourne Park has his Finnish opponent produced two immaculate sets of tennis to take the 2-0 lead.
But Medvedev, a former Australian Open finalist, used all of his experience to claw his way back, even when he looked at war with himself.
The match did not start until 11:15pm local time, due to a rain delay earlier on and the previous match — Anna Blinkova defeating Elena Rybakina — being decided by the longest tie breaker in women's grand slam history.
"This one if for sure going to stay in my memory, " Medvedev said in his post-match interview on court.
"Honestly guys, I would not be here — thanks for staying.
"If I would be a tennis fan and I would come [here], and 1[am] I would be 'ok, let's go home. We are going to catch the end of the match on the TV'.
"With tennis, you never know when you have to eat, when you have to warm up. So [tonight] it was too early, because I thought the [previous] match was going to be faster.
"I'm happy that I managed to stay tough, even if it was very tough."
Ruusuvuori made a breath-taking start against the former finalist at Melbourne Park, breaking his opponent's first service game on-route to taking the first set 6-3.
The pair traded breaks in the second set, leading to a tie breaker which the Finn was flawless.
Ruusuvuori won the first five points of the tie breaker, going on to wrap it up 7-1 and take a two set lead.
Medvedev, one of the finest hard court players in the world, was not going to throw in the towel and struck back in the third set.
The Russian broke serve early in the third set, then held the lead to get back into the match.
The fourth set was an epic struggle with Medvedev claiming a break in the opening game, only for the Finn to get the break back in the eighth game.
Medvedev received a code violation for throwing his racquet at his bench, a result of frustration after Ruusuvuori took a 5-4 lead with an exquisite forehand winner.
But that winner was effectivly the last bright moment for the Finn, who could not get the match-winning break before going down in the tie breaker 1-7.
Ruusuvuori had nothing left in the final set, as the experience of Medvedev proved to be the deciding factor in the epic contest.
The Russian was ruthless in the final set, winning 6-0 in emphatic fashion with three breaks of serve.

What. A. Day.
Day five of the 2024 Australian Open had everything.
We have enjoyed one of the truly great days of tennis.
Bring on day 6.
We will be back tomorrow (later today) with all the action from Melbourne Park.
"This one if for sure going to stay in my memory, " Medvedev said in his post-match interview on court.
"Honestly guys, I would not be here — thanks for staying.
"If I would be a tennis fan and I would come [here], and 1[am] I would be 'ok, let's go home. We are going to catch the end of the match on the TV'."
Who saw that coming?
Medvedev was ruthless in that final set.
He achieved three breaks of serve as Ruusuvuori ran out of steam.
If you were hoping for a titanic final set, you are not getting it.
Medvedev is on fire, leading 5-0.
He needs one more game to complete a fabulous comeback.
Huge from the Russian.
He leads 2-0 with the serve.
The decider begins.
We have now been playing for four hours.
Is this the latest you have ever blogged Michael??
- Carly
Hey Carly.
Thanks for sticking with me.
I hate to say it, but this is not the latest I have blogged.
The finale of the 2021 F1 season had me blogging until 6:30am after starting at about 8:30pm the previous day (it wasn't supposed to go that long).
I don't blame them.
Focus your mind before the fifth and deciding set.
The Russian has found something deep inside and wrestled this match into a fifth set.
He won the first four points of the tie breaker and ultimately took it out 7-1.
We have gone past 3am in Melbourne.
Ruusuvuori leads 6-5.
Medvedev has the serve in the 12th game of the fourth set.
If the Russian holds serve, we go to a tie breaker.
If The Finn breaks, he produces a boilover.
The Russian has just launched his racquet in frustration.
Ruusuvuori hit the most delightful forehand winner to win the ninth game.
Medvedev then hurled his racquet at his bench, and he is lucky it hit the bench.
There were at least three people behind that bench who would have been in the firing line.
Medvedev gets a code violation. Best outcome considering if he lost his grip someone could have worn that racquet on their head.
We are back on serve.
The Finn had threatened to break Medvedev a few times in this set.
In the eighth game, he finally got him.
Got out to a 0-40 lead, which Medvedev could not come back from.
A big shout-out to those in the stands at Rod Laver Arena.
Equally big shout-out to those who are enjoying our love blog of the Australian Open.
It is fun, no matter how late it is.
Hanging in there Michael? What a day of tennis, and it might keep going for another few hours!
- Harry
I'm glad you are with me Harry.
A coffee about two hours ago was a smart decision.
Chocolate is my go-to when I cover Formula 1. I figured it might help covering grand slam tennis.
The Russian keeps himself alive in this grand slam.
Who is ready for another set?
Who is still awake?
We have past 2am AEDT. Who said late finishes were a thing of the past?
Daniil Medvedev is serving for the third set.
