You have to feel a little sorry for Elliott, whose performance can’t not be compared to Kingsley’s (for which he was Oscar nominated). Elliott’s Don is a nascent psychopath rather than the fully-fledged version of the film, and it takes until halfway through the second episode before we get a real glimpse of what he will become. That’s about 90 minutes, or roughly as long as the movie ran in total, and with just a fraction of the f- and c- words that defined Kingsley’s exceptional performance.

A hard act to follow: Ben Kingsley as Don and Ray Winstone as Gal in Jonathan Glazer’s 2000 movie Sexy Beast.

But such comparisons might be unfair; for all that Glazer’s movie is revered, it has only ever been a cult hit. That means there’s an enormous world of potential viewers out there for whom the characters and the world created by writers Louis Mellis and David Scinto – who are credited by the series, though Glazer is not – will be fresh and exciting.

Personally, I think Caleo has done a pretty decent job. There are nods to the visual style of the original, echoes of some of its lines, and hints of what is to come, most of which feel logical and relatively unforced.

There’s a certain heavy handedness in the attempts to distinguish between good (working-class) and bad (posh) criminal activity, but I’m willing to overlook that. Cutting back on Don’s world-class swearing, though, may be a little harder to forgive.
