Australia has dug itself out of a serious hole on day two of the second Test against the West Indies at the Gabba, but still trails the tourists after a bold declaration.

A top-order collapse left Australia reeling at 4-24, but some late-order hitting and a dogged Usman Khawaja innings dragged Australia to within 22 of the West Indies' first-innings total.

At that point, Pat Cummins declared to allow his bowlers a chance to attack the Windies' openers with a new ball under lights.

It was a challenge the batters were up to, leaving the West Indies in a strong position after two days.

Earlier, the West Indies tail wagged sufficiently to help the tourists to a total of 311, with debutant all-rounder Kevin Sinclair hitting Nathan Lyon back over his head for a huge six to bring up his maiden Test fifty.

He was stumped next ball, ending a profitable first session in which he added 45 runs with Kemar Roach (8) and Shamar Joseph (3 not out).

The tourist's bowlers then shone with the ball as Australia's top order collapsed in dramatic fashion before the dinner break.

Steve Smith (6) future career as opener looks increasingly shaky after he was trapped LBW after shuffling across his stumps in the first over of the innings.

Marnus Labuschagne (3) followed him soon after, caught brilliantly at fourth slip by a diving Kevin Sinclair.

Cameron Green (8) looked composed before tamely spooning Roach to Brathwaite at mid off, with Travis Head (0) following him for a golden duck next ball, caught down the leg side by a diving Joshua da Silva to leave Australia reeling at 5-24 at dinner.

Mitch Marsh (21) countered after the break before another tame dismissal, dollying up a simple catch to Roach at mid off as Alzarri Joseph steamed in with deliveries in excess of 145kph.

Alex Carey could have been out for 8 but for a remarkable slice of luck, when Shamar Joseph's delivery hit the off stump bail, sending it spinning in its groove.

The Aussie keeper then counter attacked brilliantly, adding a rapid 65 off just 49 balls before he holed out to Tagenarine Chanderpaul in the deep.

All the while Khawaja played responsibly, seeing out the carnage and assisting his more aggressive partners. He brought up his own 50, eventually falling for 75 with Australia closing in on the West Indies' first-innings total.

Cummins came out swinging after the tea break, bashing his highest Test score of 64 not out before he made his brave declaration.

It took until the final ball of the day for Australia to find a breakthrough though, with Josh Hazlewood finding the slightest feather from Tagenarine Chanderpaul.

His departure made the stumps score 1-13, with the Windies leading by 35 runs ahead of an intruguing day three.

Australia vs West Indies second Test, day two

Stumps: West Indies 1-13 (Brathwaite 3)

Well, the West Indies openers did so well to survive for as long as they did.

But that last-ball wicket does change the complexion of the day somewhat - and of course tomorrow.

Is one wicket what Pat Cummins would have hoped for with that deficit declaration?

It's better than none, I guess.

But with a high of 37 degrees predicted tomorrow, with high humidity and showers, the bowlers would be a lot happier with a couple more in the sheds.

Anyway, that's a wrap for day two of the final home men's Test of the summer.

Still plenty more twists and turns in this match to come though, myself and Dean will be back for more action tomorrow, we hope to see you then.

Chanderpaul is given out!

Well then! That's the faintest of faint edges!

I'm stunned that's been overturned!

The most miniscule of peaks on that snicko graph.

Australia get the wicket they so desired.

8th over - Final over of the day, Hazlewood to bowl it

Chanderpaul leaps up and fends the ball away from his body, the ball trickling to point.

BEATEN! Hazlewood has Chanderpaul squared up inside the line. The ball sails through to Carey.

BIG APPEAL! Hazlewood is adamant Chanderpaul has got a feather on this. Cummins will review!

(Getty Images)

That is mighty close to the bat...

Nothing on hot spot.

IS THERE A NOISE? That's the smallest of spikes. The tiniest of spikes.

7th over - Starc will get one more

Six minutes to play, apparently 9 overs to be bowled, which aint happening.

Starc is going to bowl one more - could be the last over of the day.

FOUR! That has taken off, a wide rising ball that beats Carey's leap for four byes. Brathwaite did swing at it, but didn't get a touch. That's really flown off the surface.

Outside off, Brathwaite leaves this one alone.

BEATEN! Another ball that really flies off the surface, 144.8kph from Starc, Really rapid - and it looked it too. Good bowling from Starc, great pace.

He leaves outside off.

Another ball outside off, this time Brathwaite did try and jam the bat down on the yorker length delivery but missed. A touch straighter and Starc would be in business.

That's the end of the over.

Starc takes his hat from the umpire with a degree of frustration - it was a good spell.

6th over - Hazlewood continues

Chanderpaul defends the first.

And then leaves the second.

Australia has to get him playing.

Solid defence back down the pitch from Chanderpaul.

Travis Head is coming into leg slip, three slips and a gully, Hazlewood steams in, Chanderpaul fends to square leg.

Chanderpaul fends to point - no run.

Chanderpaul is being made to play, but he's playing it nicely at the moment. Solid defence from Chanderpaul.

5th over - Starc will get another

Starc steams in and Brathwaite gets a single, 143kph the speed.

Chanderpaul, with his exaggerated trigger movement, lets the ball pass outside the off stump.

There's 15 minutes or so remaining in the night's play.

Chanderpaul fends to midwicket for no run.

A comfortable single for Chanderpaul off his hip.

Brathwaite defends solidly. The steam has gone out of the crowd intensity at the moment, everyone is waiting for that magic delivery.

DROPPED! Smith drops one at second slip! Brathwaite prodding outside off, giving up the first chance of the innings, and Smudge has smudged his copybook.

Brathwaite dropped on 3, West Indies 0-9.

Declaration comments

CUZBALL. Let’s go!

- Big T

Great call - two completely different games day vs night. Would take 30 minutes bowling in this over another 20 runs (maybe) any day.

- LW

The Haze will be as fresh as a daisy.

- Mike

That’s a ballsy declaration. I like it. Trust in Captain Pat. Took a risk to go for a win.

- Margi

4th over - Hazlewood comes in

And Chanderpaul shuffles across and leaves outside off.

Chanderpaul takes a single.

Brathwaite takes off his gloves, re-tightens them. Expect plenty of time to be taken by the batters.

Bat pad is in place and Brathwaite plays it beside him for a single to square leg.

No bat pad for Chanderpaul, who stands with his wide, front on stance, and then comes across to defend.

He lets the last ball go past the outside of off stump.

Is it a bit comfortable out there at the moment for the batters?

3rd over - Starc continues

Brathwaite defends.

(Getty Images)

If Starc is not going to make Brathwaite play, then he simply won't - the ball flying through at a relatively comfortable height for the bowler.

That last one, 144kph, was a no ball.

Starc has been up over 140kph in every ball this over so far.

But he isn't making the batter play.

Another ball left outside off.

Brathwaite pushes into the off side to end the over.

Not particularly threatening from the premier strike bowler - with wickets so key tonight, will Cummins jettison the left armer for himself?

2nd over - Josh Hazlewood from the Stanley Street End

Chanderpaul leaves the first and then defends the next couple awkwardly.

The crowd are riding every ball as the bowler runs in.

Chanderpaul slices that to cover for no run.

It's still blisteringly hot out there, feels like 35 degrees, 90 per cent humidity. Steamy. Oppressive. Hostile with the crowd on top of the game and living every moment like the players.

Solid defence from Chanderpaul ends the over.

Stats

Only twice in Test history has a team won a Test having declared with a first innings deficit.

Incredibly, both matches involved the West Indies and took place at the Kensington Oval.

England declared down by 21 runs in the 1935 Test and won by four wickets.

Then, Australia declared while trailing by 43 runs against the West Indies in 2012, winning by three wickets.

1st over - Mitch Starc with the pomegranate

The crowd that is still in the stands, quite a healthy amount, are up and roaring.

Three slips, a gully and Brathwaite takes a single.

Four slips and a gully for Chanderpaul, Starc steaming in with the crowd behind him, a hint of swing down the leg side - not a great ball.

Starc steams in again and that one is on the money, Chanderpaul defends.

Lovely shot from Chanderpaul, cutting backward of point for a couple.

Chanderpaul fends to cover and takes a single to keep the strike.

AND AUSTRALIA HAS DECLARED!

THE BAZBALL DECLARATION FROM CUMMINS!

Australia trails by 22 runs, but reckons a 40-minute burst under lights with the brand new ball is worth that first innings deficit.

A tricky period for the West Indies openers to face here.

Australia managed to lose 4-24 in a similar timeframe before dinner earlier today.

What can Australia manage?

LYON IS OUT! EDGING BEHIND

Another big swing and Lyon has to go for an entertaining 19.

53rd over - Alzarri Joseph carries on

Nice from Lyon, clipping the ball over the top of slip down to third man, where there is protection.

Cummins heaves that ball, off the top edge to the backstop region for another single - he was aiming very much for cow corner, but Joseph, at 142kph, is hard to hit in that way...

FOUR! Bouncer, over the head of Lyon and Da Silva for four byes!

Lyon creams that ball through the covers, it will only be two but that was a lovely drive from Lyon.

Lyon has a swing now, misses everything.

One slip now, everyone else near enough, is back.

Lyon drives through the covers and they are going to run four! Wow, the first all-run four of the Test. AND IT'S A NO BALL!

Wow, talk about the wheels coming off for the WIndies.

52nd over - Kemar Roach returns

Lyon pulls and toe-ends the ball away for a single to mid off - he smiles and laughs about it all with Roach.

Cummins defends the ball down in front of him - asking permission from the inrushing fielder whether he can pick it up, which he does.

BANG! SIX FOR CUMMINS! An extraordinary shot from the skipper! Off the back foot, standing and delivering over long off.

Cummins swings and misses, the ball flying through to Da Silva.

Another single to Cummins to bring up his equal highest score in Tests, 63. It's a single to backward point.

Lyon pulls now and gets a single to end the over.

51st over - Alzarri Joseph carries on

Wide called as Joseph goes for a short ball but drops too short. Not egregious by any means but a wide nonetheless.

BEATEN! He beats the outside edge this time, Cummins just holding the bat outside the line of off stump.

Cummins cuts to deep backward point and gets three for it.

Lyon drives past mid off for a couple of runs.

FOUR THIS TIME! Another sublime straight drive from Lyon, who beats the fielder immaculately.

Big swing but Lyon misses out completely this time, Joseph realising that Lyon is adept at the fuller balls so dropping a touch shorter.

Another short ball, Lyon swings again and gets the ball ballooning up to the vacant midwicket region for a single.

The official attendance is 29,216 today
(Getty Images)

50th over - Sinclair has another

FOUR! Cummins hammers that to the cover boundary!

Fifty for Pat Cummins!
(Getty Images)

The Gabba rises again as Cummins reaches his third Test half century - 52 runs off 65 balls, a brilliant knock from the skipper.

Nicely guided - on purpose this time - by Cummins wide of the slip for a single.

Lyon clips hard off his pads but straight into bat pad.

Lyon tries again, going forward of bat pad this time, but he misses.

Lyon can't get the last away.

49th over - Alzarri Joseph will come back into the attack

Three slips, gully, bat pad, all wait as Alzarri steams in.

FOUR! Pat Cummins has a swing, the ball finds the outside edge past gully for a boundary.

26 of his 46 runs have come backward of square on the off side. A hugely profitable edge.

Now he gets a single to the same area, backward point.

Two slips for Lyon, bat pad and a catching midwicket - who has to give chase as Lyon plays the ball nicely around the corner to square leg for three to get off the mark.

Cummins edges to point and can't get a single.

Down the leg side, Cummins leaves alone.

Now he takes a single to cover point to move to 48.
