West Indies rookie Shamar Joseph has torn through Australia's batting line-up, taking seven wickets to power his team to an enthralling eight-run win at the Gabba.

Australia looked set for a straightforward victory at 2-113, chasing 216 for victory, but Joseph took seven of the last eight wickets in just his second Test match.

Steve Smith remained not out on 91 as Joseph clean bowled Josh Hazlewood to end the innings with 7-68 and end a 27-year victory drought on Australian soil.

Shamar Joseph, only able to play after scans on his injured toe revealed no break after he was forced to retire hurt on day four, starred with the ball.

Cameron Green and Steve Smith seemed set to guide Australia to a comfortable victory, adding 53 runs to the overnight score without alarm.

However, Joseph stunned the Aussies with two wickets in two balls to ignite the tourists and send panic coursing through the Australian line-up.

The 24-year-old Guyanese Test rookie was a touch fortunate to have Green bowled off his elbow, but there was nothing lucky about the ball that clipped Travis Head's off stump to make the South Australian the first Aussie batter to be dismissed for a king pair in a Test match since Ryan Harris in 2010.

He wasn't done there, either.

Mitch Marsh (10) edged to slip, where Alick Athanaze fumbled the ball into the hands of Justin Greaves, before Alex Carey (2) was clean bowled.

With Australia's middle order paralysed by tension, Smith serenely continued, scoring his first half century as an opener and 41st in Test cricket to calm some of the discussion around his suitability for the role.

Mitch Starc came in and blasted a 14-ball 21 to steady the nerves somewhat.

But after a handful of near misses, he was caught by Kevin Sinclair after skying a pull shot.

Pat Cummins (2) could not repeat his first innings heroics, falling to an excellent catch by Joshua da Silva for Joseph's sixth wicket of the innings, leading to the West Indies being offered an extra 15 minutes before the dinner break.

No wickets fell in that extra four overs, leaving the Australians 29 runs from victory.

Nathan Lyon did not last long after the break, caught behind off the bowling of Alzarri Joseph while attempting a pull shot. That left Smith alone with Josh Hazlewood to try to pick off the remainin runs.

Smith played some remarkable shots, including one back over his head for six, and attempted to manipulate the strike but had no choice but to allow Hazlewood some balls to face.

Shamar Joseph seized on that opportunity, knocking Hazlewood's off stump out of the ground to complete his incredible day and the West Indies' win.

Australia vs West Indies, day four

Thanks for joining us

Well, that was incredible.

Thanks for joining us.

Congratulations to the West Indies on a stunning victory.

They were fully deserving of the victory and Shamar Joseph is a star.

That's all from us here at the Gabba today.

From myself and Dean, thanks for being with us, we'll see you for the next one!

'A fantastic Test match': Cummins

Pat Cummins praises a "fantastic Test match".

"Obvious disappointment, but that was a fantastic Test match and a fantastic series.

"I think we were pretty confident coming into today, but they had different ideas. They bowled beautifully. Unfortunately just a bridge too far."

'More Test cricket the better'

"I believe the more the better," says Brathwaite.

"If it's two games and it's spaced out, it takes longer to learn.

"So the more the better."

Rodney Hogg cops an earful

Here's the West Indies skipper.

"We won a Test match in Australia, it's amazing," he says.

"My message to the group is that this is the beginning.

"We'll enjoy this, but it has to continue.

"We had two words. Mr Rodney Hogg [former Australian Test player] said we were pathetic and hopeless.

"So that was our inspiration.

"We wanted to show the world we are not pathetic.

"I have to ask him, are these muscles big enough for him?"

'Tears of joy' for Joseph

"Having Azarri backing me, a senior player Kemar Roach, all the senior player backing me.

"They supported me throughout the game.

"There was crying, but it was tears of joy that I brought this home for my team.

"I had that belief, and they believe in me also.

"It's all about belief. I made a lot of sacrifices to be here ... What bring you from there to here is just a continuation."

Joseph wasn't even going to come to the ground

Shamar says that he wasn't even ready to ready to come to the ground today.

He was still in bed at 11.

He credits Dr Bayem for getting him ready.

"He called me this morning ... he asked me how I am feeling, I said I am not well. He said come to the ground, I have a reason. The reason was to win a game for my country."

Shamar Joseph is player of the match and player of the series!

Welcome to Test cricket, Shamar Joseph.

Sealed with a bow. Incredible.

"Is actually amazing for me," he says.

"I actually want to give a shout out to my teammates ... for great words of encouragement.

"Not having a good toe to bowl with, just going through that pain and knowing that I want to do this for my team and my country and everybody in the Caribbean."

Declaration things

How significant was the decision to declare when Cummins did given they lost by 8 runs? A famous victory for the Windies.

- Bert Thomson

Thinking a lot about those 23 runs we left out there with the declaration…

- Chris

There have still only been two instances of a team winning a Test having declared with a first innings deficit...

Didn't we heck

We got our moneys worth this summer!

- Tosh

When so few gave this summer any chance of being a success, it has delivered in spades.

Shame only 3,162 people were inside the Gabba to see its conclusion.

He has taken seven of the eight wickets to fall to lead his team to a stunning victory.

Insane. It's just insane.
