The 2024 NRL season starts in Las Vegas with the Sydney Roosters defeating the Brisbane Broncos 20-10, after Manly downed South Sydney 36-24 at the site of the Super Bowl.
In the 70th minute of the second clash, Brisbane five-eighth Ezra Mam made a "formal complaint" about an alleged racial comment by Roosters prop Spencer Leniu.
Referee Adam Gee said he did not hear it, and it would be dealt with after the game.
Leniu, who was born in New Zealand and represented Samoa at the last World Cup, tried to dismiss the incident as "nothing" after the game.
"It's all just fun and games on the field and that's it," he told Triple M.
"[I'm] not worried at all."
Mam is of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander descent.
It was a pockmark on the festival atmosphere of the NRL's experiment in Las Vegas, which otherwise appeared to be a success, with 40,746 people making their way into Allegiant Stadium to watch the two games.
James Tedesco was the star of the night as his Roosters dismantled a sloppy Broncos side that struggled through the middle after losing Kurt Capewell, Tom Flegler and Keenan Palasia after their runner-up finish in 2023.
The Roosters benefited from strong performances from lock Victor Radley, prop Lindsay Collins and bench forward Terrell May, while Joey Manu delivered some stunning highlights on the flank.
Superstar Brisbane fullback Reece Walsh will want his time in Vegas over against after an error- and penalty-riddled performance, although he did score a try and set up another.
In the earlier game, former Tigers star Luke Brooks enjoyed a brilliant debut with the Sea Eagles, while Daly Cherry-Evans and Tom Trbojevic led the way as they came back from 20-12 down early in the second half to beat the Rabbitohs.
An enormous week in NRL history is over, with 40,000 people turning up to the ground and no doubt millions tuning in on TV.
The impact, success or failure of this won't really be known or felt immediately, but credit has to go to organisers for figuring it all out and getting it done.
It was a mixed bag in terms of the footy played, but round one is always a feeling-out period.
The good news is we here at ABC Sport will be live blogging every single round of NRL (and AFL) this year.
Hopefully you can stick with us through the seasons as we figure just what's going on in 2024.
Thanks for your company tonight and we'll see you later in the week.
FULL-TIME Sydney Roosters take down the Brisbane Broncos 20-10
That was an impressive performance from the Roosters, but the Broncos looked a long way below the team that made the grand final last year.
James Tedesco, in particular, was stunning in that game. As was Joey Manu, who threw one of the most miraculous passes you'll ever see to set up Fetalaiga Pauga and absolutely broke Selwyn Cobbo's ankles with some fancy footwork later in the match.
A few things will need to be cleaned up after this game, chiefly Ezra Mam's formal complaint about an alleged racial comment from Roosters prop Spencer Leniu.
80' Roosters not letting up
Set after set for the Roosters, as they force a Corey Jensen knock-on with 45 seconds left, and they set a scrum to try to land one more blow.

Meanwhile, the Roosters regather another of their own dropouts, and force a rare error from Jesse Arthars under a high ball at the other end.
Radley rumbles over
James Tedesco breaks through the middle and puts Victor Radley over under the posts.
It continues a rankly ridiculous performance from the Roosters skipper, which contrasts against a really ordinary effort from Walsh, who is just trying to do too much.
It was his handling error that gave the Roosters that field position.
The Roosters lead 20-10.
70' Ezra Mam makes "a formal complaint that's racial in nature" against Spencer Leniu
At the stoppage in play, Lindsay Collins was telling teammate Spencer Leniu to calm down.
And the two captains and Ezra Mam are called out and Adam Gee explains the situation.
"Ezra's made a formal complaint that's racial in nature against Spencer. I haven't heard it. The incident goes on report, it'll be dealt with it after," Gee says.
"Get [Leniu] to keep a cool head," Gee tells Tedesco.
69' Reece Walsh calling for the trainer
Looks like he was hit hard as he threw a pass, but nothing untoward.
Meanwhile, further up the field, Ezra Mam knocks on.
67' Riki and Leniu get into it
The focus was on a failed chip and chase from Reece Walsh, who gets penalised for hanging around on Luke Keary, while telling the ref Jordan Riki and former Panther Spencer Leniu were in a dust-up.
Walsh costs his team a penalty and field position unnecessarily.
64' Broncos weather the storm
Kotoni Staggs somehow brings down Joseph Sua'ali'i with the line at his mercy. Staggs might be the only centre in the NRL who could pull off that tackle one on one.
And Selwyn Cobbo defuses a cross-field kick on the other side of the field.
62' Roosters kick it dead on the full
Jesse Arthars plants his foot over the dead-ball line and the kick-off is dead on the full. The Broncos get the penalty from halfway.
But they can't capitalise.
Luke Keary comes up with a try-saver on Jordan Riki on the right, and Ezra Mam grubbers it dead on the left. He tried to put some curve on it, but to no avail.
Reece Walsh goes over!
The Broncos put on a spectacular left-side shift, with Walsh, Ezra Mam and Selwyn Cobbo showing off some phenomenal hands under pressure, with Jesse Arthars breaking down the left and popping a ball back infield to Reece Walsh to score under the posts.
The Broncos fullback puts in a massive and ungainly leap as he grounds the ball. Looks like he's knocked the wind out of himself. It might be the only weak part of his game.
Broncos get within four points. Roosters lead 14-10.
58' Tedesco turns up again
Adam Reynolds tries a left-foot grubber into the in-goal, but James Tedesco is on hand to shut it down once again.
He's been phenomenal tonight, especially in defence, but also challenging for every kick in attack.
57' Broncos get a life
Deine Mariner leaps for a catch and Joseph Sua'ali'i is penalised for taking him out in the air. The Broncos kick for touch but can't get over their 40m line.
56' Broncos battling
Brisbane just gets over halfway in its first set since the Roosters' second try.
JOEY! MANU!! He's pulled off the best try assist you might ever see
It looked for all money like Jesse Arthars and Selwyn Cobbo had wrapped up Joey Manu on the right, but he's somehow flicked a backhand pass around both of them to put Fetalaiga Pauga over in the right corner.
How did Pauga even know to be awake to this?
Sam Walker converts for a 14-4 lead.
47' The Roosters knock on
It's an opportunity wasted as Radley knocks on and Walsh and Carrigan get the Broncos moving straight away.
Meanwhile, the crowd is confirmed 40,746. The ground has a capacity of 65,000.
46' Reece Walsh called for a shoulder charge
He's been great tonight, but Jesse Arthars makes a meal of cleaning up Brandon Smith's attempted 40/20.
The Roosters go on the attack and swing it left. Daniel Tupou appears to have the line at his mercy but Reece Walsh flew across and launched him into touch.
The officials missed it initially, but James Tedesco's captain's challenge earns his team a penalty for a shoulder charge.
44' Arthars again, but can't quite get there
Jesse Arthars is carrying his 2023 form into this game and makes a brilliant flying grab over Fetalaiga Pauga, but he's brought down just before the tryline.
43' Reece Walsh remains a freak
The defence rushes up on Reece Walsh, but he manages to step inside and loop a ball over the top to Jesse Arthars, who breaks down the left and is eventually brought down 5m out.
Adam Reynolds improvises a grubber, but Lindsay Collins cleans up. He made a strong tackle on a breaking Kotoni Staggs on the other side of the field about two plays earlier. What a workhorse.
41' Broncos kick off to start the second half
James Tedesco powers through the middle and over halfway off the Terrell May offload. Broncos immediately on the back foot.
But Deine Mariner helps them out with a superb flying grab from Sam Walker's bomb.
