The AFL will hold a moment’s silence before Thursday’s season opener between the Sydney Swans and Melbourne at the SCG to mark the deaths of couple Jesse Baird and Luke Davies, who were allegedly murdered by a serving police officer.

Swans staffed and friends of the club wore black armbands to pay tribute to the couple during last Saturday’s Mardi Gras parade in Sydney.

Players and umpires involved in Thursday’s game will wear black armbands as a mark of respect to the couple.

Baird was a serving AFL goal umpire alongside his work in the media, debuting on the league’s elite umpiring list in 2020 before going on to officiate in the AFL, including two finals.

Sydney Swans chief executive Tom Harley spoke of the sadness felt by the club at the passing of the couple and their wish to remember them.

“The Sydney Swans family is still deeply saddened by the passing of Luke and Jesse,” Harley said.

“They were both integral parts of the Swans community and will be remembered for their contribution to the game of football in Sydney, so we feel tomorrow night’s tribute is a fitting one.”

“Jesse was a popular member of the AFL umpiring family, having officiated 62 games – many at our home, the SCG. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Luke and Jesse.”

Baird was originally rostered to umpire the Swans against Greater Western Giants match simulation at Tramways Oval in Sydney on February 22, but did not turn up for the game and was not in touch with colleagues.
