Both Carlton and the Brisbane Lions are counting the cost of Friday night's thrilling match at the Gabba, with Sam Docherty and Keidean Coleman both suffering anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.

The Blues confirmed on Saturday night Docherty's season is over due to a ruptured ACL and tear to the meniscus in his right knee he sustained during his side's 13.8 (86) to 12.13 (85) victory.

The ACL injury is the third of his career and it happened when he was tackled during the first quarter of the Blues' triumph.

Coleman will miss the remainder of the season after the 23-year-old was injured when his left leg clashed with Carlton tackler Lachie Fogarty as he kicked the ball.

Docherty and Coleman both had scans on Saturday.

The Blues are hopeful Docherty, who underwent two rounds of chemotherapy across 2020 and 2021, will resume his AFL career next year.

"There is arguably no player in our competition who is more beloved than Sam Docherty," Blues general manager of football Brad Lloyd said in a statement.

"Football becomes almost insignificant when you consider all Sam has endured and overcome over the last few years.

"This news simply isn't fair, but as Carlton people we love Sam dearly. We will support him through this so he can return to the field when he is ready."

Coleman, who played in last year's grand-final loss to Collingwood, is set to begin his rehabilitation program in the coming weeks.

"It's really disappointing news for Keidean, especially in the first game after a strong preseason and an impressive finals campaign last year," Lions football manager Danny Daly said in a statement.

"However, Kiddy (Coleman) is only young and has a very bright future ahead of him with the Brisbane Lions, which we all look forward to.

"Kiddy is an extremely positive and calm person, so I am confident those traits will no doubt help him get through his recovery over the coming months."

Docherty, 30, has 168 AFL matches under his belt, having played for both the Blues and Lions.

Coleman has played 65 senior matches for the Lions since his debut in 2020.
