Pop icon Madonna welcomed Kylie Minogue to the stage in Los Angeles, in one of the more celebrity-driven celebrations of International Women’s Day.

The two stars performed a duet of Gloria Gaynor’s 1978 anthem I Will Survive, as well as Minogue’s 2001 hit Can’t Get You Out of My Head.

Elsewhere, women around the globe marked International Women’s Day on Friday, taking part in strikes, marches and demonstrations that underscored efforts to combat discrimination and accelerate the drive for gender parity.

After the performance, Madonna posted on Instagram, “Couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate International Woman’s Day…………..Then to Sing with @kylieminogue …. On. Stage last night!!!!”

The event, first celebrated in 1911, traces its roots to the early struggles for equal pay and votes for women.

In Paris, supporters attended a ceremony formally enshrining a woman’s right to abortion in the French constitution.

The initiative was overwhelmingly approved by MPs earlier this week, even as the US and other countries restrict access to abortion.
