Annabel Neasham would love to get Castanya in the Golden Slipper and finds herself in a win-and-you’re-in situation heading to the Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.
Castanya is 17th on order of entry for the 16-horse Slipper after a debut second behind Switzerland and a win in the Lonhro Plate but can’t go any higher without winning.
“It’s a weird situation because usually when you are one out of the field you can jump a couple by running a place, but she is too far away from the next one in the entry order to do that,” Neasham said.
“There are two horses that could jump into the field on Saturday, so it was no good staying at home and hoping with her. She can go and earn a place in the Slipper.”
The explosive nature of her win when she beat the boys in the Lonhro Stakes after coming from near last had Neasham making Slipper plans until the filly had a foot problem heading into the Sweet Embrace Stakes two weeks ago.
“It’s a little frustrating with her because I think she wouldn’t be out of place in the Golden Slipper, but she has had a nasty foot on her hind leg, which has taken a couple of weeks to get right,” Neasham said.
“It has been a case of waiting, knowing she has that real motor she showed last start. She looks great. It is never ideal coming off a setback, but I expect her to run well.
“If she wins the Slipper will be there, but there are other options for her like the Percy Sykes if she doesn’t.”
Castanya became the $3.40 favourite for the Magic Night when Blue Diamond fourth placegetter Eneeza was scratched. Sweet Embrace Stakes runner-up Fly Fly, which is a $3.60 chance, isn’t entered for the Golden Slipper but victory could see connections pay the late entry fee.
