“The armadillo is maybe a more direct reference than the Sydney Opera [House],” Ingels said, saying they also looked to Boston’s Fenway Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field for design ideas.

The ballpark will have a fixed roof that will be covered by five overlapping layers that are meant to resemble baseball pennants and will let in sunlight. The outside of the stadium will be clad with metal that designers say will reflect the Las Vegas Strip at night.

It will also feature what designers are calling the “world’s largest cable glass net wall”, which offers a view of the Strip.

Ingels is an award-winning architect who, like Utzon, began his career designing Danish housing complexes, two in particular in Orestad: VM Houses and Mountain Dwellings, which won him international acclaim.

He is well known for a host of buildings in Denmark, including the Danish National Maritime Museum at Helsingor, adjacent to the Kronborg Castle, which is cited as an early influence on Utzon’s design for the Sydney Opera House.

The famous Tropicana hotel and casino, which originally opened in 1957, will permanently close on April 2 to make way for the stadium, which will have a seating capacity of 33,000. It is due to open in 2028.

It’s not the first time comparisons have been made between the design of the Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning building at Bennelong Point and other buildings of note around the world.

New Delhi’s Baha’i House of Worship, also known as the Lotus Temple, was designed by Iranian architect Fariborz Sahba and, when completed in 1986, many comparisons were made about the design similarities.

Scotland’s Clyde Auditorium, better known as “the Armadillo”, built in homage to the River Clyde’s shipbuilding heritage, drawing inspiration from the ship’s hulls, has also been compared with Utzon’s work.

The Canary Islands city Santa Cruz de Tenerife earnt the nickname “the Sydney of the Atlantic” when an auditorium designed by Santiago Calatrava opened in 2003. His “Hemisferic” in the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain, is also said to have nods to the Sydney Opera House in its design.

Chinese officials in Hai’an county, in Jiangsu province, were accused of “ripping off” the design of the Sydney Opera House to create an elaborate building in which to store crops at huge expense.

Equally, there are a surprising number of similarities between Utzon’s design and the model for the never-built Sternkirche, designed in 1922 by Otto Bartning, originally planned for Berlin.

Claims that Utzon “plagiarised” Bartning’s design have been widely dismissed.

Although it is understood when he and the Arup engineering team were looking for solutions as to how to build the Opera House shells, they looked to the idea of the freely suspended thin concrete skins Bartning had planned for his building, but ruled out using a similar technique.
