Bree Walker has become the first Australian to win a bobsleigh World Cup gold medal following her victory in the women's monobob event in Lake Placid.

Walker's triumph saw her secure second place on the final World Cup monobob standings with 1,549 points, the best end-of-season ranking of her career.

Germany's Lisa Buckwitz topped the rankings with 1,644 points.

Walker set a track record in Lake Placid with her first run, clocking 59.22 seconds.

She recorded 59.45 in her second and final run to finish ahead of American Elana Meyers Taylor on the combined two-run times, with Canada's Cynthia Appiah placing third.

The result gave Walker her fifth World Cup medal of the season.

"It feels amazing, I came into this week knowing that I can be competitive and to come away with a win is the best possible way I could end the monobob season, I am so happy," Walker said.

"Heading into the second run I knew I had to execute what I did in the first run.

"When I crossed the line I couldn't even see the time or know where I had finished, but I knew it was a good run and I would be in the medals, but even better that it's the win."

Walker will team up with brakewoman Kiara Reddingius in the two-woman event in Lake Placid.
