“For those who don’t know, we train in little DTs [swimming briefs], so when you put on the suit, it feels like I’m flying,” said Queenslander Sam Short, who triumphed in the 1500m at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

“I’m dropping way more time at training, and it’s just like an extra boost almost.

“You just get confidence when you put on the Speedo race suit. It’s so modern in high performance, and it brings out the best in who wears it.”

Australia’s chef de mission, Anna Meares, watched on as the nation’s swimming, water polo, diving and surfing prospects embraced the swimwear that she believed would translate to profound results in Paris.

The former Olympic cyclist said Australia still hoped to send up to 470 athletes to the Games – only 37 have secured a place so far – and the chosen swimmers would be given every opportunity to win.

“You certainly would dream and aspire for this race suit to be a gold medal-winning suit. It’s fast, it’s world-leading in this technology to bring in space tech – it’s really amazing,” Meares said.

“It just gives us the edge, I think. You put a fast suit on some fast swimmers, it’s going to make for some really exciting outcomes.”
