It’s that time of the year when the beautiful people descend on the desert for two weekends of debauchery. While Coachella is ostensibly a music festival, it has become increasingly known for delivering the kind of unscripted viral moments that capture our collective fascination (and live forever on the internet).

So far, it appears Coachella 2024 is sticking to the script. The first weekend served up a delightful mix of viral on-stage antics, high-profile guests, and meme-worthy hijinks. From an uncomfortable Grimes set to Taylor Swift’s support of an Aussie artist, here are six of the biggest moments so far.

Weekend one served up the return of No Doubt, a surprise duet from Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey and a legendary on stage spray courtesy of Blur frontman Damon Albarn.

Damon Albarn abuses the crowd for not singing along

It turns out ’90s Britpop may not be that popular with the swathe of Gen Z influencers who make up Coachella’s crowd. Blur frontman Damon Albarn learned this the hard way after he tried (and failed) to get a call-and-response singalong to the wordless hook of Blur’s 1994 hit single Girls & Boys. After being met with a wall of confusion and silence, Albarn let loose. “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well f---ing sing this,” he announced. Sadly, they did not.

Gwen Stefani and Olivia Rodrigo stealing the show? No Doubt

In further proof we’re all ready to move on from Gwen Stefani’s weird cultural appropriation phase, No Doubt’s return to the stage was welcomed with open arms. Performing together for the first time in nearly a decade, the group stole the show on Saturday, reeling off hits from their impressive back catalogue (Hella Good! Don’t Speak! Just A Girl!).

But No Doubt cemented its status as weekend one’s water cooler band when it brought out It Girl, Olivia Rodrigo (rocking an I Heart No Doubt tee), to help sing its 2000 hit Bathwater.
