Koa Davies was learning to surf before he could walk.

Now, the 6-year-old Cowaramup local is beating other kids in surfing competitions and taking on waves almost four times his height.

He is fresh off his first competition win at the Gero Grom Fest where he won the under eights category and surfed the best wave of the competition.

"I had a 9.5 ride," he said.

"[I'm feeling] really good."

He credits three greats to his already early success, "Jack Robinson, Kelly Slater, and my dad", and has one goal in mind.

His dad Jarrad Davies noticed his son's talent around the age of four at the Margaret River mouth.

"Before he could walk we had him on a board. I used to pick him up and stand him on it before he can remember it," he said.

"[He's surfed] a five-foot wave, so four times overhead for him."

As a surfer himself, Mr Davies wanted to see if he passed the same desire onto his son.

"I pushed him out onto some waves on a hardboard … that just allowed him to be able to lean and turn, and he started riding," Mr Davies said.

"It just blew me away." 

Epicentre of surfing in WA

Koa lives in what Surfing WA chief executive Mark Lane has called the "epicentre of surfing in WA".

Currently some of the best surfers in the world are in his home town for the Margaret River Pro.

Mr Lane said the area, which has just secured the popular surfing event until 2028, had produced some of the world's best surfers and would continue to do so.
