Having a bed covered with a set of great bed sheets will help tremendously with getting comfortable at night and potentially improving your sleep. If you're a hot sleeper, you can get cooling sheets to help keep your temperature down. Sometimes you just want a set of luxury sheets to come home to and wrap up in like Egyptian cotton sheets or bamboo sheets. Maybe this is new to you and you're struggling to find what's best for you. We've tested the best to help you decide.

How did we choose the best bed sheets? Based on the quality and type of sheets you pick, your sleep can be significantly affected. Our sleep experts evaluated these sheets (by sleeping on them) and tested them for softness, durability and breathability. Rest assured that if you invest in top-quality sheets, you're getting a premium product. All prices shown are for the queen-size set.

What are the best sheets overall?

The best sheets are the Luxome Luxury Sheets. If you're a hot sleeper like me, you want sheets that wick away moisture and regulate your body temperature during the night. Viscose material, made from bamboo, does just that. The Luxome sheets are breathable, light and feel silky. Keep in mind that the material will absorb anything you go to bed with (for example: lotion), but stains can easily be removed with a quick wash.

Best sheets of 2024

Sheets & Giggles

If you're a hot sleeper, the last thing you want is a sheet set that slowly roasts you all night. Sheets & Giggles eucalyptus sheets are our pick for the best cooling sheets.

Unlike other sheets for hot sleepers, the Sheets & Giggles lyocell sheet set doesn't sacrifice silkiness for a crisp, cool touch. Made from eucalyptus, these ultrasoft sheets sleep cool and comfortably, without building up body heat overnight.

These sheets "brought me the best sleep of my life," said CNET How-To Editorial Director Jessica Dolcourt, who bought and tested three other sheet sets before finding this lyocell set. "I could live in these sheets," she added. Sheets & Giggles sheets come in eight solid colors and three striped patterns, ranging from gray and blue shades to deep purple. We also think they offer an affordable price tag given how soft and luxurious they feel.

Buffy

Buffy is a popular bedding brand that offers sheets made of eucalyptus fibers, one of the most eco-friendly materials available. Buffy is known for its cruelty-free, plant-based, naturally dyed, earth-friendly and home-safe bedding. On top of that, its sheets are super comfortable.

Buffy's Breeze Sheet Set is great for hot sleepers. Eucalyptus fibers are naturally cooling and breathable, as well as fully biodegradable. The sheets feel soft and silky, and they're lightweight. When paired with a cooling pillow, the light pillowcases hardly interfere with the cooling sensation at all.

Some colors and sizes sell out faster than others, so watch out for when your favorite color is available. Also, look out for regular sales from Buffy. You might be able to get these sheets for less than $145.

These sheets are part of our Editor's Choice 2024 roundup.

Pros:

  • Naturally dyed and plant-based
  • Cool to the touch
  • Can snag these for under $145 during a sale

Cons:

  • Material stains easily
  • Only 300 thread count

MySheetsRock

If you're somebody who likes the feel of silky smooth bed sheets, but dislikes how unbreathable and warm silk sheets can be, the Regulator set from MySheetsRock may be a great solution. Made with 100% bamboo rayon, they're ultralight, breathable and silky soft. We think they are the best bamboo bed sheets available.

Typically, if I sleep in my birthday suit in regular cotton sheets, they fail at wicking moisture away, leaving me a sweaty sleeper. These bamboo sheets are great at moisture-wicking and left me feeling dry and cool. I also really like how stretchy they are. At first, you might think they're a little big for your mattress, but a quick run through the washer and dryer will easily fix it.

If you're a sucker for packaging, I felt like I had just scored the winning basket in a championship game upon opening the box; it's like a greeting card that sings a song when you open it. There were also instructions inside on how to become a sheet burrito, which was pretty charming for sheet packaging.

The Regulator sheets come in nine different colors and start at $149 for a twin set.

Pros:

  • Moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating
  • Feel silky smooth
  • Stretchy and lightweight

Cons:

  • Almost $200
  • Not cool to the touch

Additional details

  • Price: $$
  • Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, Split king
  • Material: Bamboo rayon
  • Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillowcases

Brooklinen

The Brooklinen Luxe sheet set takes the cake for one of the best (and my favorite) sateen-weave bed sheet sets. Sateen refers to the type of weave used, which is typically a three- or four-over, one-under weave, leaving a soft finish that tends to be a little heavier. The Luxe Core set is one of my favorites because it offers comfort and breathability. I'd say they're lighter and a little more crisp than your standard sateen sheet set, making them great for all seasons including warmer months. The Luxe Core sheets also offer a very reasonable price tag compared to other premium sheet sets I've tried.

The Brooklinen Luxe set is made with 100% cotton. They're soft to the touch with a premium 480-thread count. Climbing into bed with them after a long day was dreamy; you can really feel how luxurious they are as the sheets drape over your skin. They also seem to be more wrinkle-resistant than other cotton or bamboo sheets I've tried.

There are a variety of colors available for the Luxe Sheet Set, including neutrals and fun limited editions. In my opinion, Brooklinen had the best set of colors and patterns to choose from. Prices start at $159 for twin sheets and go up to $229 for California king sheets. Brooklinen often offers discounts and even has special savings on your order if you're a first-time buyer.

Pros:

  • Soft, sateen-weave
  • Best range of colors and patterns
  • 480-thread count

Cons:

  • Returns are subject to a $9.95 fee
  • Might not be cooling enough for hot sleepers

Additional details

  • Price: $$
  • Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
  • Material: Long-staple cotton
  • Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillowcases
  • Available colors: 14
Sleep Number

The Sleep Number True Temp sheet set is potentially one of the softest sheets I’ve ever tested. They almost have a silk-like feel that’s extremely comfortable. The cool thing about these sheets is that they’re designed to absorb excess heat, so you don’t get sweaty while you sleep. While I wouldn’t consider them actively cooling sheets, they did deliver on that promise.

Another thing I appreciated about the True Temp sheets from Sleep Number was the fully elasticized edge and anchor bands that ensure your sheets stay in place all night. They’re also labeled, so putting the sheets on has never been easier. These sheets are a little more expensive than other options, but if you’re willing to spend more, they’re well worth it. Not to mention, you have 100 nights to decide whether you like them or would rather return.

Pros:

  • Silky, soft feel
  • 37.5 technology from Sleep Number keeps you from heating up at night
  • Straps and labels that make putting them on your bed easy
  • OEKO-TEX certification
  • 1-year limited warranty, 100-night trial

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Made from a cotton-blend
  • Fewer color options than other brands

Additional details

  • Price: $$$
  • Sizes: Queen, king, split king, FlexTop king, California king, split California king, FlexTop California king
  • Material: 76% cotton, 22% polyester and 2% spandex

Boll & branch

Unlike other brands, the Boll and Branch sheet set focuses less on thread count and more on the quality of threads, which is something to appreciate because the truth of the matter is that thread count isn't the be-all and end-all measurement of sheet quality. The Signature Hemmed set from Boll and Branch is made from premium organic cotton threads with a four-over, one-under sateen weave. It gives the sheets a slight sheen and an amazingly soft feel that transports me to a fancy five-star hotel. We think it's the best organic cotton sheet set you can buy.

The more you use these sheets, the softer they'll get. My significant other has been using Boll and Branch sheets for over a year now, and they feel even cozier than they did when he first pulled them out of the package. They are truly buttery-soft, creamy and drape nicely over your body without being too heavy.

I believe it's the nature of the thread's organic cotton that makes these sheets sleep cooler and lighter than traditional sateen sheets. Organic cotton is better at wicking away moisture if you tend to sweat while you sleep. They feel extremely luxurious and are worth the price if premium sheets are in your budget.

Pros:

  • Buttery and lightweight feel
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton
  • Fits mattresses up to 17 inches deep

Cons:

  • Most expensive on this list
  • Wrinkles

Additional details

  • Price: $$$
  • Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, Split king
  • Material: Organic cotton
  • Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillowcases

Pottery Barn

If you sleep with your pets, you may not care much about the hair or smells, but if you could sleep with your pet and minimize dander and odors, wouldn't that be great? While you'll be hard-pressed to find a truly pet-proof luxury sheet set, a few characteristics can help. The best bed sheets for people who sleep with pets will feature a tight sateen weave, a smooth finish and durability.

Silk and linen sheets work well, but not everyone enjoys the slippiness of a silk sheet or the roughness of a linen sheet. Cotton works too, as long as it's tightly woven with a smooth finish (look for percale or sateen sheets when shopping).

These sateen sheets from Pottery Barn features an impressive 700-thread count, making them dense and durable enough to withstand pawing from your dog, yet soft enough to support cozy sleep. They're not cheap, but they'll probably pay for themselves over time because they'll stand up to your pup, and Pottery Barn has pay-over-time options.

Pros:

  • 700-thread count
  • Soft, smooth and wrinkle-resistant
  • Fits mattresses up to 16 inches deep

Cons:

  • Very pricey
  • Not available in Twin, Twin XL or Split King sizes

Additional details

  • Price: $$$
  • Sizes: Full, queen, king, California king
  • Material: Cotton
  • Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillowcases
  • Available colors: 3
Target

You may not want to spend over $100 on a bed sheet set, but you still want a quality pair that makes you excited to jump into bed. The Solid Performance set from Target offers a comfy and inviting feel at an extremely reasonable price tag.

They're made with 100% cotton and have a 400-thread count and honestly feel more expensive than they are. They're soft to the touch rather than scratchy or starchy like other low-cost sheets I've tested. They do seem a bit more wrinkly and might need a little ironing if you're somebody who loves the look of a smooth sheet on your bed.

Another great thing about these sheets is how big of a mattress they can fit. Your mattress can be up to 18 inches thick and these sheets will fit nicely and snugly around it.

Pros:

  • The price is great, considering it is made with 100% cotton
  • Top and bottom labels
  • Fits mattresses up to 18 inches deep

Cons:

  • Wrinkle more than other sheets on this list
  • Only 400-thread count

Additional details

  • Price: $
  • Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
  • Material: Cotton
  • Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillowcases
  • Available colors: 12
Empyrean Bedding

If you're one of those people who has fist fights with their sheets at night, you need some high-performance bed sheets that won't come untucked from the corner of your mattress. You need a good fitted sheet that stays put through restless nights.

Buyer reviews online pay testament to the extra-deep pockets and the sheet staying put even for sleepers who move a lot during the night.

  • Reinforced corner elastic straps

It's true they aren't the most luxurious sheets out there. For around $30 or less, you get what you pay for. That said, for the average person they are a good everyday sheet that you will sleep well on.

Pros:

  • Many available colors
  • Can fit mattresses up to 16 inches deep

  • Don't have the most luxurious feel

What are the different sheet types?

When it comes to the best bed sheets, there are a lot of fabric and weave options you have to sort through. If you're just starting, that can get confusing. So let's go through the main fabric options found in sheets.

  • Percale: Percale is one of the most common fabrics among the best bed sheets because it's lightweight and soft. It's a plain-weave fabric that's typically made from cotton, though it can be made from polyester, rayon or other synthetic fabrics.
  • Flannel: Flannel sheets are what you want to have when it's cold outside. Made from cotton, it's a more medium or heavy-weight fabric. Unlike other sheets, flannel isn't measured in thread count, it is measured by weight per square meter.
  • Microfiber: Microfiber is another extremely popular sheet style. It has a tight polyester weave, which means it's more durable than other options like satin or sateen. Microfiber sheets are often your budget option.
  • Satin: Satin feels like the ultimate luxury, it's silky and smooth with a shiny finish. Satin sheets aren't as durable as other sheet fabrics, as it's a pretty delicate material.
  • Sateen: If you're looking for a more luxurious feel, sateen sheets may best fit your needs. Sateen is a type of weave with vertical threads. This type of sheet typically is more fragile than dense woven fabrics.
  • Jersey: Jersey sheets are like putting your favorite T-shirt on your bed. It's made with the same knit cotton blend that clothing uses. The best jersey sheets are stretchy and soft, but they tend to snag and develop pilling over time.

How we tested sheets

We tested sheets the only way you can -- by sleeping on them. Our team of experts considered important factors like the material, cost and option availability. Then we compared the top options out there to narrow down our list for the best bed sheets.

CNET editors pick the products and services we write about based on editorial merit. When you buy through our links, we may get a commission. The sheets mentioned in this list were either sent to us with no strings attached for review or purchased by our editors.

Other sheets we've tested

LL Bean Ultrasoft Comfort flannel sheets: For those who shiver all night, cozy sheets are key, especially in the frigid winter months. Flannel sheets keep you warm and toasty all night long -- and make it hard to get out of bed in the morning. LL Bean's Ultrasoft Comfort Flannel Sheets are among the softest bed sheets available today. They are incredibly soft and high quality.

Factors to consider before buying sheets

Keep these elements in mind when shopping for new sheets.

Materials

Choose sheet material based on the season, your sleeping temperature and how it feels. Bamboo and organic cotton sleep cooler, while flannel is soft and warm.

Pocket depth

Regular sheets are designed to fit mattresses between seven and 14 inches tall. You'll need deep pocket sheets if your mattress is over 14 inches tall.

Price

You can find a pair of sheets to fit almost any budget, but sheets made of the most premium materials will be a higher price. Budget sheets are often made of microfiber, which is a lower-quality material.

Thread count

Sheets with a high thread count can make for a more luxurious finish, but make sure they're made of a quality material. Material matters most.
