In short:

Objects were thrown and fans stormed the pitch after Argentina appeared to score a late equaliser against Morocco.

After almost two hours, the goal was ruled out by VAR, and the final three minutes of the game were played in an empty stadium.

Morocco's 2-1 victory over Argentina at the Paris Olympic Games was marred by crowd trouble that saw the game suspended for nearly two hours.

Objects were thrown at Argentina's players following what appeared to be a dramatic equaliser from Cristian Medina, who scored deep into 15 minutes of added time.

Bottles and cups rained down on the celebrating Argentines before some fans burst onto the field at the Geoffroy-Guichard in St-Etienne and approached the bench.

Those pitch invaders were escorted from the field by stewards before riot police encircled the playing area.

The referee, Sweden's Glenn Nyberg, took the players off the pitch after which supporters were told to leave the stadium.

With three minutes of added time remaining, a decision was made to play out those final minutes behind closed doors.

Before the restart though, the goal that sparked all the trouble was ruled out by VAR for an offside in the build up.

Soufiane Rahimi had given Morocco a 2-0 lead with goals either side of half-time.

Argentina hit back through Giuliano Simeone, son of Atletico Madrid manager and Argentina legend Diego Simeone.

However, the two-time champions could not score an equaliser, either before or after the dramatic interruption to the contest.

Argentina coach Javier Mascherano said he "can't explain what happened".

"We spent about an hour and a half in the dressing room where they never told us what was going to happen," he told reporters.

"The Moroccan captains didn't want to play, we didn't want to continue, and fans threw things at us.
