French authorities have reportedly arrested an activist belonging to an ultra-left movement at a site belonging to national rail operator SNCF.
Days after sabotage attacks paralysed the network at the start of the Olympic Games, a police source said the man was detained in Oissel in northern France on Sunday.
The man had access keys to SNCF technical premises, tools and literature linked to the ultra-left, said the source on Monday, asking not to be named.
He was placed in police custody for questioning in Rouen, the main city of France's Normandy region.
Unknown individuals had early on Friday attacked three different railway installations in different parts of France, causing days of chaos on the high-speed network during the 2024 Olympic Games.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin told France 2 television that the authorities were looking into the theory that ultra-left-wing movements were behind the attacks.
French services had "identified a certain number of profiles that could have committed" the sabotage acts, he said.
He said the "attacks were intentional, very precise, extremely well-targeted", adding that this was "the traditional mode of operation of the ultra-left".
"The question is whether they were manipulated or is it for their own account," he added.
By Monday morning, all high-speed trains in France were finally running normally again after railway engineers worked round the clock to repair the damage, said Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete.
The cost of the sabotage would "very probably" amount to millions of euros, including "commercial losses" and "repair costs", the minister told RTL.
Overall, around 800,000 people faced disruptions, including 100,000 whose trains had to be cancelled outright, he added.
Fibre optic cables running near the tracks and ensuring the transmission of safety information for drivers, such as signalling lights and points, were cut and set on fire in the attacks on three of the main high-speed TGV lines, in the west, north and east of France.
Telecommunications lines targeted
Vandals attacked telecoms lines in parts of France overnight, disrupting some fixed and mobile services, the junior minister for digital matters, Marina Ferrari, said on X on Monday.
A police source said it was too early to tell if there was any link to sabotage on the high-speed rail network.
Ferrari called the vandalism "cowardly and irresponsible" and said work was underway to get services back up and running.
A spokesman for telecoms operator SFR said vandals had made cuts to its long-distance network in five different parts of France in the early hours of Monday.
The impact on clients was minimal because the network was designed to reroute traffic, he said.
Le Parisien newspaper reported earlier that cables in electrical cabinets had been cut in southern France, and that installations in the Meuse region near Luxembourg and the Oise area near Paris had been vandalised, affecting mainly fixed-line services.
