The Indian wrestler who was disqualified from her gold medal final after failing to make weight has retired from the sport.

Vinesh Phogat was set to lock horns with American Sarah Hildebrandt for the gold medal but the 29-year-old fell 100 grams short despite starving herself for a week and spending hours in the sauna to cut down to her competition weight.

In a post on X Phogat announced her retirement from the sport.

"Wrestling won and I lost. My dreams are shattered. I don't have any more strength," Phogat wrote on X.

"Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all. I am sorry."

Phogat defeated Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals, but her disqualification pushed Guzman Lopez into the gold medal match on Wednesday night, local time.

Hildebrandt defeated Lopez in the final 3-0 to take the gold.

Phogat had gotten off to a great start at the Paris Games, stunning four-time world and defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan in her first match on Tuesday.

She eventually won her first three matches to earn a spot in the 50-kilogram final.

Phogat was the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic final in wrestling.

It is unclear if Phogat has ever previously been disqualified for not making weight.

She had never placed higher than ninth at the Olympics or third at a world championship event before this impressive performance at the Paris Games.
