A worker at the Byerwen Coal Mine near Glenden, about 160km west of Mackay, has died in a surface incident involving two vehicles.

It's the second death this month at the Bowen Basin mine, which is owned by the Brisbane-based QCoal.

Queensland Resources Minister Scott Stewart has told Queensland Parliament he had been informed of the death.

"There has been an incident between a haul truck and a light vehicle," he said.

"I have spoken to the independent health and safety regulator, Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ).

"They are preparing to head to the mine site right now. There will be a full investigation into this fatality.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those involved."

Emergency services were called to the worksite at 1.10pm.

Queensland Ambulance said in a statement  the worker had been found with critical injuries and was declared deceased at the site.

Second death this month

The death comes just weeks after Chris Schloss, 48, died on August 3 at the same mine in an incident involving a pick and carry crane.

Support programs were set up for Mr Schloss's colleagues, some of whom witnessed the incident.

At the time, QCoal group executive James Black said Mr Schloss's death had shocked everyone.

Investigation underway

Police have confirmed they will prepare a report for the coroner and said the Forensic Crash Unit was investigating.

A QCoal spokesperson said the incident was being managed by onsite contractor McMahon.

RSHQ said the incident would be investigated.

"A Resources Safety and Health Queensland coal inspector and Serious Incident Investigation Unit investigator are on their way to the mine," RSHQ said.

The Mining and Energy Union has been contacted for comment.
