Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has said a forward pass called on captain James Tedesco cost his side a chance to get within eight points of Penrith in Friday night's qualifying final loss.

After Penrith produced a near-flawless first half which earned them a 24-0 lead at half-time, the Roosters scored two quick tries to reduce the margin to 14 points early in the second half.

Sydney believed they were about to score a third try in the 63rd minute which could have brought them within eight points, when a terrific sequence of passes at midfield led to Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i streaking away to the try-line.

But referee Ashley Klein ruled the final pass from Tedesco was thrown forward, denying Sydney a third consecutive try.

Sydney would not score again on Friday night, with Robinson claiming he believed Klein made a wrong call.

"I didn't think it was forward. I don't think anyone thought it was forward except the ref," Robinson said during the media conference after the match.

"Looking at the replays and the angle of the pass — that's a big call in that moment and you can't get that wrong."

Tedesco also said post-match that he thought the wrong call had been made by Klein.

Robinson did not claim the decision affected the outcome, after Penrith were excellent in the first half.

The Roosters' coach said his side was beaten in contact over the opening 30 minutes, when the Panthers opened up a 24-point lead.

Meanwhile, Penrith's win was their 10 consecutive win in a finals match.

Since losing the 2020 grand final to the Melbourne Storm the Panthers have been perfect in finals, winning three straight premierships. They are now two wins away from four on the trot.

Their 10th consecutive win equals the finals record held by St George, set between 1958 and 1962.

It was also their 10th successive win over the Roosters.

It is the first time the Roosters, a foundation team established in 1908, have been defeated by a club 10 times in a row.
