Former Australian and Queensland coach Darren Lehmann will join ABC Sport's broadcast team for the upcoming summer of cricket.

Queensland Cricket confirmed on Tuesday that Lehmann, who has spent the last six years with the Brisbane Heat franchise, including time spent as assistant coach to the Queensland Bulls, was leaving the state coaching staff.

The South Australian, who played 27 Tests and 117 ODIs for Australia between 1996 and 2005, remains the all-time Sheffield Shield top-scorer with 12,971 runs for his home state and Victoria.

Lehmann coached Deccan Chargers in the IPL, and had three years with Queensland and the Brisbane Heat before taking charge of the Australian team from 2013 to 2018.

He then joined the Brisbane Heat as head coach in 2019 until 2021. He has been an assistant coach with the team since then, capped with the Heat's BBL title win this season.

"I've had a great time over the journey with so many fond memories from that time,’" Lehmann said of his stint with the Bulls and Heat in a statement announcing his departure.

ABC will again be the home of cricket this summer, providing all Australians access to all Test matches, T20 Internationals, One Day Internationals, Women's Big Bash League and Men's Big Bash League matches played in Australia.

The marquee event of the summer is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between Australia and India, which will begin with the first Test in Perth from November 20-26.

Lehmann will be part of ABC's commentary team for all five Tests, the ODI series against Pakistan, a series of men's BBL games and regular appearances on Summer Grandstand.

The summer of cricket will start with the Australian women's team taking on New Zealand in three T20 Internationals, beginning on Thursday night in Mackay.

Fans will be able to hear matches across ABC's local radio network and every ball of every match on the ABC listen app.
