COMPLETED DEALS ON DAY 2 OF THE AFL TRADE PERIOD
Jack Graham joins West Coast as an unrestricted free agent. Richmond receives an end of second-round pick (currently No.42) as compensation in the 2024 draft.
Once touted as a potential Richmond captain, Jack Graham will earn the Tigers a second-round AFL draft pick with his move to West Coast.
Graham is the first of several expected player departures from Richmond, with Shai Bolton, Daniel Rioli and Liam Baker all in the trade period mix.
Graham, 26, is going to the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent on a four-year deal and the AFL announced on Tuesday that Richmond would have pick number 42 as compensation.
Last week, the league raised eyebrows when they gave St Kilda a round-one pick for losing Josh Battle to Hawthorn under free agency, and did the same for GWS when Harry Perryman went to Collingwood.
Earlier on Tuesday, retired Richmond captain Dylan Grimes told SEN that the Eagles had hit paydirt by signing Andrew McQualter as their new coach and also bringing in Graham.
McQualter was an assistant coach at the Tigers and Grimes played alongside Graham in the 2017 and 2020 premiership teams.
Grimes called McQualter a "star" and said the Eagles players would "fall in love" with Graham as soon as they start training with the on-baller.
"He seems to be able to get more out of his aerobic capacity than any other player I've met," Grimes said.
"What that looks like on game day is just this absolute workhorse; a team player, someone that really is happy to do a role for a team."
West Coast also want to trade for Baker, while Bolton (Fremantle) and Rioli (Gold Coast) are likely to depart Richmond during the trade period.
But taciturn Tigers football boss Blair Hartley has made it clear that it's up to rival clubs to pitch their deals.
Meanwhile, Collingwood look in the box seat to secure the trade for Port Adelaide's two-time Australian Dan Houston.
The defender wants to join a Melbourne club, but has not publicly nominated a preference.
Carlton and North Melbourne are also interested, but Collingwood's likely trade with Gold Coast for John Noble would give them pick number 13.
That would give them the leverage they need to nail the deal with Port for Houston, one of the biggest names in the trade period mix.
No immediate breakthrough is expected as Geelong negotiates with the Western Bulldogs over Bailey Smith, who is out of contract and keen to join the Cats.

Hi Chris. Do you know is there is any latest updates on Clayton Oliver.
- John
G'day John.
There is still plenty of speculation surrounding Melbourne Demon Clayton Oliver.
There is a strong suggestion a trade could still be in the works, despite the Demons's vocal stance that he will be at the club next season.
This is a story that will be watched with interest over the next few days.
Hi Chris. Sorry if this question has been asked, but what’s the different between restricted and unrestricted in free agents???
- Clare
Hello Clare.
I hope it is fine that I answer this question for you.
I am going to use the exact wording the AFL uses to determine the difference between a restricted and unrestricted free agent:
Hello all.
I am Michael Doyle and I am going to steer this ship home for the evening.
It's not a trade, but the Eagles have made an announcement.
Former premiership player and coach John Worsfold is returning to West Coast as the club's new head of football.
According to the Eagles:
John will assume the full-time role as "Head of Football – West Coast Eagles" and work across the entirety of the club’s football programs and teams. His responsibilities will include coaching structure and development, performance and culture.
It has come to that time of the day where I've sadly got to bid you all farewell.
We've not had much trade action, but I've had a blast discussing all things trade with you.
I now hand you over to the very capable hands of my ABC Sport colleague Mick Doyle!
He'll take you through until 6pm AEDT.
Chris, the AFL Trade Period is important. But bigger question is how will Sri Lanka go in the T20 series against the West Indies?
- Damien
Hi Damien,
I'm glad you're also a Sri Lankan cricket enthusiast.
As it pertains to the upcoming T20 series against the Windies, I've got two numbers for you.
3-0.
Any chance of Essendon getting some good picks?
- Merrowyn
Hi Merrowyn,
Essendon isn't poised to be a major player in this year's trade period at this stage.
The Bombers could however try and move up the draft.
As things currently stand, Essendon's first pick in this year's draft is slated at No.9.
The Bombers have access to young gun Isaac Kako, who is rated as the best small forward in this year's crop, and will hope a bid on Kako comes after their first pick.
The only problem is Kako has shot up draft boards in recent years, with Melbourne at No.5 and St Kilda at No.7 and No.8 reported to be very interested in placing a bid on him, which would then mean the Bombers' first-rounder gets absorbed.
It'll be interesting to see whether the Dons pursue a trade with North for example, who are entertaining offers on the No.2 pick.
One trade that had been talked about a bit in the lead up was potentially Weitering going to St Kilda, especially after losing Battle. How is this one shaping up?
- Kate
Hi Kate,
Thanks for bringing this up! I'd completely forgotten about St Kilda's reported massive offer to Jacob Weitering which surfaced a few months ago.
Weitering comes out of contract next season, but spoke recently about wanting to remain at Carlton. I'd suspect that gets done.
“It’s always an ongoing conversation, especially when you’re about 12 months out from finishing up the current contract. I’ve always said I want to be a Blue for life and those discussions will certainly take place in the near future I’d expect,” he told SEN's Whateley.
“I want to be here for as long as I can if my body holds up. I’ll leave that to my manager and the club to get after and just make sure I play some good football next year. I’m not too sure (on when it’ll get done).”
Given Weitering made his first All-Australian team this year, Carlton will be keen to sign him up sooner rather than later.
Carlton goalsneak Matthew Owies is struggling to find a club for 2025 due to his asking price, according to the Herald Sun.
Owies is reportedly hunting a pay packet in between $700,000 and $800,000 per season, a figure that the Blues and rival clubs have baulked at so far.
The 27-year-old has kicked 60 goals in 41 appearances over the past two seasons, but that is a very steep asking price.
Any suggestion that the eagles are in the market for a replacement for Barrass? Gov isn't getting younger and it's not like elite key backs come ready made in the draft..
- LW
Hi LW,
You certainly make a great point, it's not going to be easy for the Eagles to replace Tom Barrass.
I haven't heard of them being linked to any key defenders at this stage, so they're probably looking towards the draft and some internal development from guys already on the list.
An interesting trade nugget from Damian Barrett on AFL Trade Radio.
Barrett believes a Clayton Oliver trade could still be in the works, despite Melbourne's strong stance on it to date.
Hi Chris, I heard the Saints have gone a bit quiet on Jack Macrae - have you heard or seen anything related?
- Steve
Hi Steve,
Jack Macrae looms as one of the most interesting trade cases this year after requesting a trade to St Kilda.
Firstly, he is contracted through 2027 with the Bulldogs, but played just 19 games this year and averaged a career-low 18.4 disposals per game as he seemingly fell out of favour with Luke Beveridge.
He is a three-time All-Australian, who is still just 30 years of age, and is just two seasons removed from averaging 30 touches a game.
However, he's got A LOT of miles on the odometer already, having played 249 games so far in his career.
Dan Hannebery suggested on AFL Trade Radio earlier today that the Dogs and Saints are "haggling over a late 40s pick".
The Saints currently own No.46, does that satisfy the Dogs? The next best Saints pick in this year's draft is No.27.
If Freo cough up both picks 10 & 11 for Bolton it tells us they think they are close to a premiership tilt. I think they are a few pieces of the puzzle away from that still. Where do we think their squad is in this respect?
- Millsy
Hi Millsy,
You're certainly right that it appears Fremantle thinks it is pretty close to an all-out flag tilt.
Freo finished 10th this year, but I reckon they're a much better outfit than that. They won 12 games and had a percentage of 111.9, and were third on the ladder with a month to go in the season.
They've got a pretty complete list given five players (Andrew Brayshaw, Jordan Clark, Luke Ryan, Caleb Serong and Hayden Young) made the extended All-Australian squad this year.
That was an equal-high for any club in the competition and tied with the eventual premiers, Brisbane.
Shai Bolton would be an excellent injection of class forward off the ball, and is that connector between the midfield and forward line that Freo sorely lacked this season.
With the retirement of Joe Daniher, any ideas if the Lions will be hunting any tall forwards to fill that gap?
- BLFAN
Hi BLFAN, hope the premiership celebrations are going well!
Brisbane list boss Dom Ambrogio indicated yesterday that the Lions wouldn't be hunting any big names to replace Joe Daniher.
With that being said, I wonder whether St Kilda's Tim Membrey might appeal as a decent stop-gap option.
Membrey, 30, is an unrestricted free agent and would likely come pretty cheap and can slot in and fill a role in Brisbane's forward line.
Tom Lynch has been floated as a potential option down the road.
The only problem with Lynch is his age and durability issues. He comes out of contract at the end of next season, meaning he'd be 33 years old in his first season with the club if he was to move.
I just wonder how much good footy he has left in him, given he's played eight games in the last two years.
Gold Coast's second first-round pick in this year's draft (currently No.13) is looming as the key in the Dan Houston sweepstakes.
SEN's Sam Edmund is reporting that both Collingwood and Carlton are trying to get ahold of the pick which would be then sent to Port Adelaide in a larger package for Houston.
Here is the Collingwood offer.
Collingwood sends: John Noble, 2025 first-round pick
Gold Coast sends: Pick 13 and 23
And this is Carlton's current offer.
Carlton sends: 2025 first-round pick, 2025 second-round pick
Gold Coast sends: Pick 13
As things currently stand, the Suns have three first-round picks (6, 13 and 23) in this year's draft.
With Cam Rayner being a free agent - any ideas about if he will stay with Lions or move on?
- Rachel
Hi Rachel,
Cam Rayner hasn't really indicated either way whether he wants to stay at Brisbane or leave, but my guess would be he's pretty happy sitting somewhere with his premiership medal.
Rayner is the prototypical gamebreaker every club looks for, so the Lions would be pretty keen to sign him up beyond next season.
Given he's from Victoria, there will always be that lure of coming home, and I'm sure the big clubs will throw the kitchen sink at him.
If he hits the market, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a deal in the ballpark of $1 million annually.
That may seem like overs, but I'm a big Cam Rayner fan and I think he's primed to explode into becoming one of the top 10 players in the competition in the next 18 months.
Rayner is one of a number of big potential free agents at the end of next season alongside Tom De Koning, Andrew Brayshaw and Luke Davies-Uniacke to name a few.
Is Richmond playing hardball on Bolton going to Freo? Pick 5 seems like a very good deal for Richmond, given it probably overvalues Bolton.
- Kate
Hi Kate, thanks for following!
Shai Bolton is yet to nominate a club, but the consensus is that he'll end up at Fremantle, given he's a better fit into their age demographic.
Fremantle's earliest picks in this year's draft are picks No.10 and 11.
Cal Twomey believes the Dockers might have to give up both to get Bolton, who is contracted through 2028 with Richmond.
Is it just me, or does that Graham Compo seem light on? Tigers fans won't be happy!
- Simon
Hi Simon,
Yeah it's an interesting call from the league.
Riley Beveridge earlier today on AFL Trade Radio thought that the Tigers would receive a band two or band three compensation pick, but it ended up being band four.
The AFL's system is a bit of a lottery though when it comes to compensation.
Hi Chris, Great blog and work throughout the AFL season this year. There doesn't appear to be much, if any news about the Swans except for Luke Parker and a few delistings. Might you have any updates for us?
- Ben
Hi Ben, thanks for the kind words and for following along!
It does appear the Swans will be pretty quiet this summer outside of the Luke Parker trade with North.
I suspect the Swans will have their work cut out this time next year though if Chad Warner decides to go back home to WA.
Here's what their list manager Chris Keane said yesterday.
