Essendon's Jake Stringer appears increasingly likely to request a trade to GWS.

Stringer had a contract for next season with Essendon but opted to explore his options as he wants at least a two-year deal.

Sydney and Collingwood both ruled out making a play for the forward before the Giants expressed their interest late.

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd said some clubs might feel Stringer was not a good fit for them on and off the field.

"I see players who have nowhere near the ability of Jake Stringer who get two, three, four years," Lloyd told 3AW.

"I look at guys like Jack Graham, Alex Neal-Bullen, they don't have the talent of Jake Stringer.

"That's where Jake needs to be able to have people tell him that, whether it's his management or people around him saying, 'You should have another three years left in this game'.

"You should be receiving a two-year deal on good money, because there's not many players who kick 42 goals in this game, but because of your inconsistency both on the field and off the field, I presume, no-one trusts you.

"There is not the trust in you that people want to have, and even your own club doesn't have it at the moment."

No moves were completed on day three of the AFL's trade period.

Fremantle has put to Richmond what it considers a "really strong offer" for Shai Bolton in an attempt to get the Tigers to the table.

Dual-premiership Tiger Bolton, 25, is determined to return to his home state of West Australia despite being contracted until the end of 2028.

He has not nominated Fremantle officially but the Dockers loom as his destination given they hold a strong draft hand.

The offer currently on the table is reportedly picks number 10 and 18.

The Tigers are set for a busy trade period.

Gold Coast have pick number six on the table for contracted half-back Daniel Rioli while West Coast will work with Richmond on a deal for Liam Baker.

Jack Graham has already joined the Eagles as a free agent.

The Swans have knocked back North Melbourne's offer of pick number 62 for veteran Luke Parker, who is contracted to Sydney until 2025.

Geelong announced on Wednesday the re-signing of Jake Kolodjashnij, Jed Bews, Lawson Humphries and Ted Clohesy.

That's all from us!

That is where we're going to leave it after an uneventful day three of the AFL trade period.

For those asking, we've got no fresh news coming through on Clayton Oliver or Bailey Smith, but we have another week of trade period to go so watch this space …

We'll be back tomorrow morning with our digital coverage of day four.

Bye for now!

Dockers announce cross-code recruit … of sorts

It's quiet on the player front but the Dockers have recruited a new team member … off field, that is.

Retired Perth Wildcats legend Damian Martin has joined the Dockers to take charge of the club's AFL leadership program.

"I've been weighing it up for a while now, and the more I thought about it, the more motivated I became to get involved," Martin said in a Docker statement.

"I genuinely believe the Fremantle Dockers can achieve something special, so if I can contribute, even in a small way, it was hard to turn my back on that opportunity.

"I'm not coming in with any preconceived ideas whatsoever.

"I'm a big believer in, 'Know your role, embrace it, do it to the best of your ability', and then I'll be looking for ways in which I can help."

Yay or nay?

This isn't the first time we've seen this query on social media.

Any updates on owies and Melbourne?

Sorry Toby, there's unlikely to be any fresh news on Matt Owies before the close of today's business.

Taking over the late shift

Thanks to Chris for putting in another lengthy shift today.

As blogger trades go, I feel sorry for our readers that they have to put up with me, but I'll try not to get de-listed before we shut up shop in a few hours time.

We've got a trade to announce!

Chris De Silva profile image

Finally a move, but unfortunately it's not between AFL clubs.

The time has come for me to leave the hot seat for the day, and I'll be replaced by my colleague Luke Pentony, who will keep an eye on things for the rest of the day.

Thank you for joining me and I'll be here at the same time, same place tomorrow!

Can Clayton Oliver declare for the draft?

Chris De Silva profile image

If Clayton Oliver is as determined as (some) reports suggest to leave Melbourne, is there a chance he might nominate for the draft? Obviously runs the risk of another club picking him up but I can't see Geelong having the draft capital this year to get him there, particularly whilst trying to get the Bailey Smith deal over the line.

- Kate

Hi Kate,

Clayton Oliver cannot declare for the draft as he is under contract with Melbourne through 2030.

If there's no trade that can be agreed to, Oliver will simply have to return to Melbourne.

It's a little different to the situation with Bailey Smith, who is out of contract.

Could Tom Barrass stay at West Coast?

Chris De Silva profile image

Any chance of Tom Barrass actually staying at West Coast, or will Hawks offer something better than they already did, to make it happen?

- Cass

Hi Cass,

That's definitely a possibility. Tom Barrass is under contract through 2027, so he could certainly return and play next season for the Eagles.

We've seen that happen plenty of times in the past where a player requests a trade but then remains at the club.

Star Richmond duo on the move?

Any fire to the smoke that Taranto and Hopper are up for grabs at Richmond?

- woae

Hi Woae,

I've not heard it reported anywhere that Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper are on the move from Richmond.

Saints shuffling in the draft order?

Chris De Silva profile image

Good afternoon - any news for Saints fans? What do you make of the chatter about St Kilda making a play for Essendon’s P9 to go with their P7 and P8?

- Pou Steele

Hi Pou,

Haven't heard any credible reports about Essendon being willing to trade out of the draft.

I can't see why the Bombers would do that, particularly with Isaac Kako in this year's class.

Quartet of Cats sign new deals

Chris De Silva profile image

There's no trade news happening but we've got a whole heap of re-signings!

Geelong has just announced that Jake Kolodjashnij, Jed Bews, Lawson Humphries and Ted Clohesy have all signed new deals.

Kolodjashnij and Humphries have signed through to 2026, while Bews and Clohesy have both signed a one-year deals.

The risk facing Geelong over Bailey Smith standoff

Chris De Silva profile image

The Bailey Smith trade from the Bulldogs to Geelong looks like it will be one of the more protracted trade sagas this year.

If the two teams cannot agree on a deal for the out of contract midfielder, he can declare for the national draft.

AFL.com.au's Damian Barrett explains the risk behind that.

"There is nothing stopping other clubs from taking Bailey Smith in the National Draft," he said on Trade Radio.

"They won't, because they have all got cosy, but that's the way the system is meant to work.

"That if you do take that risk (of walking them through the draft), you run the risk of not going to the club you want to go to."

What's the best deadline-day trade ever?

Chris De Silva profile image

I reckon we might have a few deals go down to the deadline this year, just judging by the way things have gone over the last few days.

There's been a few good ones in recent years, Jeremy Cameron to the Cats comes to mind from 2020, which was only seconds away from not getting over the line.

Dylan Shiel's move to Essendon in 2018 also went right down to the wire.

Give us some of your best ones from previous years in the comments!

Where things stand for Port Adelaide

Chris De Silva profile image

Any update on Port Power and the trade on Houston? Any chance they are in the mix with getting a tall forward to replace Dixon?

- Pat

Hey Pat,

There's been no real update on the Dan Houston situation today.

All trade period, the race to get pick 13 off the Suns appears to be what will unlock that deal, but it looks like there's still some way to go.

In terms of replacing Charlie Dixon, it doesn't appear Port is chasing anyone externally at this stage.

They've got a pretty solid setup with Mitch Georgiades being flanked by Todd Marshall (when healthy), and I mentioned yesterday that they're pretty high on Ollie Lord as well.

Still waiting on an Oliver twist

Chris De Silva profile image

Is there still any chance clayton will request a trade to the cats.

- Ben

Hi Ben,

The Clayton Oliver situation appears to be very much a standstill at this point.

Melbourne has copped a public beating over the last few weeks, so it wasn't a surprise to see them come out strong on Monday.

I wouldn't entirely count out an Oliver trade to Geelong, but it looks very unlikely at this stage.

Who wins the race for pick 13?

Chris De Silva profile image

Hey chris Who do you think wins the race for pick 13 and do Gold coast secure rioli and noble to

- Oliver T

Hi Oliver,

It's hard to say but I'd have my money on Collingwood simply because they've got something the Suns want in John Noble.

Basically, both sides are incentivised to get a deal done in that scenario, whereas it's a little different with Carlton.

Potential reverberations of Jake Stringer to GWS

Chris De Silva profile image

If Jake Stringer gets to GWS what does that mean for Jake Riccardi? Is he someone the Brisbane Lions could look to target for cheap?

- FitzroySam

Hi Sam,

That is an excellent point you make!

Jake Stringer's arrival at GWS is going to result in a shuffling of deck chairs in the forward line.

Jake Riccardi is an interesting one. He kicked 26 goals from 19 games this year, backing up from 35 goals in 21 games the year before.

Is he good enough for someone to build their forward line around?

I'd be intrigued as to what exactly his trade value would be given he's contracted at GWS through 2026. He'd be an excellent pick-up for Brisbane as a Joe Daniher replacement.

What's happening with Matthew Owies?

Chris De Silva profile image

There was a report that emerged yesterday claiming Carlton's Matthew Owies is seeking an annual salary in the ballpark of $700,000.

That was rubbished by his management.

Nine's Tom Morris confirming that Owies has met with some clubs despite still being unsigned for 2025.

"Matt Owies - The reports were entirely false, he isn't asking for the money reported," he told AFL Trade Radio.

"What I can say is that Matt Owies will have a home next year. If it is Carlton or somewhere else, he is too good a player not to be on a list, he has met with a few clubs, he will have a home in 2025."
