Essendon has confirmed discussions with the GWS Giants over a potential deal for Jake Stringer, although no formal trade offer has been made at this stage.

Collingwood is now considered frontrunners for the services of Dan Houston after key meetings between the club, Port Adelaide and the player's management.

Meanwhile, GWS youngster Conor Stone has re-signed with the club despite meeting with the Bombers over a potential move last week.

Follow live as we bring you all the action from day four of the AFL trade period.

What are the best feelgood trade stories?

Chris De Silva profile image

I know we mentioned trade heartbreaks earlier, but what about the feel-good stories? Ben Brown was turfed out by bottom-of-the-ladder North Melbourne, only to win a flag the very next year with the Demons! Same thing happened with Billy Frampton, unwanted at Adelaide and a premiership player at Collingwood 12 months later

- Thomas

Hi Thomas,

LOVE this idea!

You're right, Ben Brown and Billy Frampton are definitely some feelgood trade stories.

Bobby Hill has got to be up there too.

Got denied a move to Essendon a year before and was left in tears at the trade deadline. He gets the move to Collingwood 12 months later and wins a premiership and a Norm Smith.

Send in some more of your feelgood trade moves everyone!

What would a Chad Warner trade look like?

Chris De Silva profile image

Hey Chris, I don't believe it would happen but considering nothing else is going on it's a fun hypothetical. Do you think Sydney would take Freo's 3 first rounders in exchange for Chad Warner this trade period? Thanks!

- Phil

Hi Phil,

Chad Warner would definitely be up there in terms of trade value from around the competition.

Fremantle's earliest picks in this year's draft are 10, 11 and 18.

That would certainly be a strong offer. Would Sydney prefer 18 or Freo's 2025 first-rounder? That'd be the question.

Would they want a player back from Fremantle? These are the questions that are well above my pay grade.

Could Dan Houston remain at Port Adelaide?

Chris De Silva profile image

What the chances Houston is still at Port next year?

- Dean

Hi Dean,

He definitely could, if Port Adelaide doesn't agree to do a deal with anyone this year.

Houston has mentioned that he loves the club and he's contracted through 2027, so he'd have no problem coming back to Alberton for 2025 if required.

We've seen this happen before, more recently with Joe Daniher at Essendon and Josh Dunkley at the Bulldogs, where a trade request was denied and then the player returned to the club after no trade was agreed upon with their desired clubs.

When will the Dan Houston trade be done?

Chris De Silva profile image

Hey Chris, just curious about the Houston trade mate. Should we expect it to push out towards the deadline do you think because of all the moving parts?

- Gus

Hi Gus,

I think given Collingwood and Port Adelaide both have things the other wants, the Dan Houston deal won't go right down to the deadline.

I don't expect it to happen this week though.

Is Kozzie Pickett on the move?

Chris De Silva profile image

Hey Chris, Would it be fair to say the Kozzie Pickett to Fremantle trade was merely a rumour? If not what kind of picks would it take to get this deal done, as I believe he'd be someone who could really take Fremantle to the next level.

- Nicko

Hi Nicko,

A few weeks after Melbourne's season wrapped up, there was a suggestion that Kozzie Pickett wanted out of the club.

Here is what Tom Morris reported in August.

Then-Melbourne president Kate Roffey did confirm Pickett, who is a WA native, had felt a little "homesick", but then shut down any suggestions that he would be traded this year.

Pickett, 23, is contracted with Melbourne through 2027.

The latest news on Shai Bolton

Chris De Silva profile image

Update on Shai Bolton?

- Angus

Hi Angus,

There's been no updates today on Shai Bolton's potential move to Fremantle.

Yesterday it was revealed that Fremantle has tabled an offer of picks 10 and 18 for the former All-Australian.

It is yet to see whether that will appease Richmond.

What's the latest on Clayton Oliver?

Chris De Silva profile image

We've received a few comments asking whether there has been any developments on Clayton Oliver.

The short answer is no.

Melbourne is in somewhat of a crisis management situation at the moment, and trading one of their star players who is contracted through 2030 would be another major PR hit the club can't really afford.

Former AFL boss Andrew Demetriou mentioned this yesterday.

“Absolutely I would (be holding firm if I was Melbourne),” Demetriou said on 3AW.

“You can’t have consecutive years of this (unrest) going on, the uncertainty that surrounds is not really want you want to see.”

Why are the Giants interested in Jake Stringer?

Chris De Silva profile image

Hi … what do you think is the logic for GWS’ push for Jake Stringer. They have a big goal kicker in Jesse Hogan with Aaron Cadman still developing. Why are they adding another forward when they have lost people from the mids. The last two losses for the season showed they need reliable ball carriers to get the ball to the forwards. Seems like a strange move.

- Paul

Hi Paul,

I'd say Jake Stringer is basically a free hit for the Giants. He's going to come at a bargain bin price in terms of draft picks they have to give up, and I can't imagine he'll command a high salary at all.

So for that price, and thinking about what you can potentially get out of him on the field, it's an absolute no-brainer move for them.

Stringer works best in a situation where the team doesn't rely on him every single week. The Giants are constructed in a way that anything he provides will be a bonus.

Day 4 - still just a potato

Chris De Silva profile image

This trade period is like Bart Simpson's science project observing a potato - Day 4. Still just a potato.

- Simon

Hi Simon,

This is a great reference, I wish I could grant you a trade as a gift, but it appears there are actually no trades happening this year.

Apologies

Could Tim Membrey go to Brisbane?

Chris De Silva profile image

Haven't heard a ton about Tim Membrey looking for a new club, despite that being reported. Would Brisbane look like an option given they have lost Daniher?

- Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I think Tim Membrey will have to wait until later on in the trade period to have his future sorted.

Although we're at a big impasse at this stage, once one big move goes through, it usually has a domino effect and we see several others in quick succession.

Membrey would be an excellent stop-gap replacement for Joe Daniher.

Is anything going to happen?

Chris De Silva profile image

will any trades actually happen today?

- Paddyr

Hi Paddy,

Honestly, your guess is as good as mine at this stage.

But no, on a serious note, it doesn't seem like any moves are imminent.

What will happen with Jack Macrae?

Chris De Silva profile image

Multiple reports suggest St Kilda's deal to get Jack Macrae to the club will go right down to the wire.

Here's Cal Twomey and Riley Beveridge explaining what a trade deal that will satisfy the Bulldogs would look like.

Explaining what the Suns are up to

Chris De Silva profile image

Tom Morris with the latest on what Gold Coast is up to.

The Suns of course are trying to bring in Daniel Rioli and John Noble this year.

"There has been criticism around the Suns, and while I respect that, it needs to be balanced a little bit," he told Trade Radio.

"They were forced to offload Jack Bowes to Geelong to reset the salary cap.

"Pick 6 for Dan Rioli seems like overs, but being in contract, you have to pay overs for some players."

Bulldogs tipped to go down to the wire

Chris De Silva profile image

The Bulldogs are known for their tough trade stances, and this year appears to be no different.

AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey expecting all the Dogs deals to go down to the wire.

Which player in the AFL would have the highest trade value?

Chris De Silva profile image

What Player do you think would get traded for the most right now and what would that be

- Oliver T

Hi Oliver,

That is a great question.

I'd say given his age and how good he is already, Nick Daicos would probably fetch the most trade value at the moment.

If they were a little younger, the likes of Marcus Bontempelli, Patrick Cripps and maybe Max Gawn would be fairly high as well.

Top draft prospect meets with Tigers, Demons and Saints

Chris De Silva profile image

Josh Smillie is tipped to go inside the top 10 in November's national draft.

Smillie, who says his role model is Carlton captain Patrick Cripps, has met with Richmond, Melbourne and St Kilda.

"I was lucky enough to get interviewed by Simon Goodwin from the Dees and Adem Yze at Richmond and Ross Lyon at Saints," he said.

"It was amazing to be in the room with them and hear what they had to say to me. Definitely didn't take it for granted."

What's happening with Caleb Daniel?

Chris De Silva profile image

Is it still looking like Caleb Daniel will be going to North? It will be a shame to not see him in the red, white, and blue next year.

- Kate

Hi Kate,

The latest reports on Caleb Daniel's future is that he will not force a trade away from the Bulldogs.

I think all parties involved in that move are adopting a wait-and-see approach at this stage.

How would Carlton fit Dan Houston in its cap?

Chris De Silva profile image

With Carlton not be able to sign Owies possibly because of salary. Why did we expect them to be able to add Houston who I'd assume is being paid well for his services.

- Krack

Hi Krack,

You make a very good point about Carlton's salary cap and its chase for Dan Houston.

Had they been able to agree to a deal with Port Adelaide, it would've required some serious cap gymnastics from list boss Nick Austin I'd imagine.

Essendon open to moving around the draft

Chris De Silva profile image

Matt Rosa has also confirmed that Essendon has fielded calls over its first-round pick (currently No.9).

"We've had some offers around that Pick 9," he told Trade Radio.

"The pointy end of this draft is strong. It would need to be a considerable offer for us to give up Pick 9 at this stage."

Rosa said Essendon has explored potentially moving up the draft, but clubs ahead of the Bombers are hesitant to trade down.

The Bombers currently hold picks No.9 and No.31 in this year's draft, and Rosa said the club is keen to add a couple more selections.

Essendon confirms discussions with GWS over Jake Stringer

Chris De Silva profile image

Essendon list manager Matt Rosa has confirmed that GWS has reached out regarding a deal for Jake Stringer.

Rosa confirmed on AFL Trade Radio that Stringer was yet to make a formal trade request, and the Giants are still yet to place a formal trade offer to the Bombers.

"No formal position on that, as you are aware GWS has shown some interest," he said.

"We will work through that one as more information comes to light. I won't speculate on pick 56 but it would need to be adequate compensation."
