Train services are back up-and-running after commuters faced delays on Thursday throughout Sydney and NSW.

It comes following a short stop strike in the morning, which had flow-on effects continuing through to peak hour.

Transport for NSW confirmed that the train lines impacted were across the state.

Potentially effected areas included the Airport and South line, Blue Mountains line, Central Coast and Newcastle line, Cumberland line, Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line, Leppington and Inner West line, Lidcombe and Bankstown line, Liverpool and Inner West line, North Shore line, Northern line, Olympic Park, South Coast line, Southern Highlands line and Western line.

Sydney's south-western suburbs, such as Campbelltown and Macarthur, were the hardest hit. Buses replaced trains between Campbelltown and Macarthur until further notice due to the industrial action.

Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink said in a statement they have been notified of protected industrial action from the Rail, Tram, and Bus Union (RTBU).

"This included a five minute work stoppage at 3:10am this morning, which has caused minor impacts to the start of morning peak services," they said.

"Sydney Trains are working to minimise the disruption to commuters as much as possible."

Transport for NSW asked passengers to plan ahead, leave extra travel time and keep updated about any changes to services via their website.

The brief industrial action comes amid negotiations for a new enterprise bargaining agreement with the rail agencies and combined rail unions.

Metro services in Sydney are running as per usual, with no delays reported.
