Jasprit Bumrah has led India into the ascendancy in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar series, dismantling Australia's batting line-up as India fought back to finish on top at stumps on day one in Perth.
Australia ended the day 7-67, still 83 runs behind India after a record 17 wickets fell in a single day at Perth Stadium.
In a staggering spell of 3-9, Bumrah removed debutant Nathan McSweeney (10), Usman Khawaja (8) and Steve Smith (0) in a fearsome six-over blast that dragged the tourists back into the game after they were cheaply dismissed for 150 before tea.
Travis Head (11) and Mitch Marsh (6) tried to launch counter-attacks, while Marnus Labuschagne went to the other extreme with 2 off 52, but all eventually fell to expose the tail with Australia more than 100 runs in arrears.
Captain Pat Cummins became Bumrah's fourth victim when he nicked off as stumps approached, with Alex Carey (19*) and Mitchell Starc (6*) both riding their luck as they made it through, although they face an almighty task to get the hosts back into the fight.
Earlier, it appeared a good coin toss for Cummins to lose when stand-in captain Bumrah put Australia into the field and India was bowled out for just 150 inside 50 overs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal both failed to score, with Virat Kohli making just five to leave the tourists floundering at 3-32.
KL Rahul battled hard for 26 before being controversially dismissed caught behind off Starc (2-14) by DRS.
Given not out on field, Rahul was adamant that he did not edge the ball behind, with replays appearing inconclusive as to whether his bat hit his pad over the ball.
Mitch Marsh (2-12) claimed two scalps after lunch, dismissing Dhruv Jurel (11) and Washington Sundar (4) as India limped towards 100.
Rishabh Pant (37) played some entertaining shots as part of a 58-run partnership with Nitish Kumar Reddy (41), including a remarkable scooped pull over his shoulder for six off Pat Cummins (2-67).
But even their enterprise fell flat, as Josh Hazlewood (4-29) led the Aussies to what appeared to be an excellent start, before Bumrah made mincemeat of the Australian top order.
Look back at how day one unfolded in the live blog below and check out the full scorecard.
Stumps: Australia 7-67 (Carey 19, Starc 6)
Well, what an extraordinary day. An incredible 17 wickets have fallen on day one.
After bowling India out for 150 runs you'd have probably thought that Australia had enjoyed a decent day.
But Jasprit Bumrah had other ideas, bowling at the absolute peak of his powers to reduce Australia to just 7-67.
Incredibly, Australia still trails by 83 runs.
It has been a remarkable day. It's been India's day.
And there's still plenty more to play for over the next few days.
We'll be back for all the action as it happens tomorrow from 1:20pm AEDT.
But for tonight, from myself Simon Smale and himself Jon Healy, good evening.
27th over - Bumrah to bowl the last of the day
Three slips and a gully, Carey takes a single out to backward square leg, Starc wants another but Carey sends him back despite a small misfield. It was the right call.
Solid defence from Starc.
FOUR! Nice shot from Starc, chipping Bumrah over mid off for a boundary. Nice shot from Starc. And it feels like every run is valuable at the moment.
Bouncer, Starc turns his head and leans away.
Starc drives to mid on, but there is no run.
CHANCE! Almost caught and bowled! A slower ball too! That was very, very good bowling from Bumrah, but Starc survives!
26th over - Rana carries on
Carey takes a single. No protection offered for Australia's tail.
None required, either. Starc launches over the top of the infield for a couple to get off the mark.
Outside off, Rana looks annoyed, Starc disinterested.
Outside off, Starc moves back away with a gentle sway like long grass in the breeze.
Starc defends the last.
There will be one more over.
25th over - Jasprit Bumrah has four more
Mitch Starc is the next victim.
He defends the first ball he faces.
BEATEN! My goodness! How did that miss?! That's passed the inside edge, gone over the stumps and not hit anything. Incredible.
Solid defence with a broad face of the bat from Starc.
BEATEN! Outside off, Starc, well aware of his batting limits, knows there's not much chance of him even ever hitting that type of ball at his best. He smiles. It's a pained one. Australia are rocking.
EDGED! CUMMINS IS OUT!
BUMRAH HAS FOUR!
Cummins is out for 3!
Australia is in freefall, 7-59!
It was a decent ball, Cummins devoid of anything deserving of being called footwork, just fends one to a diving Pant who takes the catch.
25th over - Jasprit Bumrah comes back on
Carey gets a pill from the team medic, so perhaps there is something going on for him.
Cummins backs away, shows his stumps to his opposing captain and pushes to backward point for a couple.
24th over - Rana comes back onto the attack
A bouncer, that Rana follows up by walking in a long way towards Pat Cummins.
Cummins pushes the next to cover with no run.
CLOSE! Cummins goes the upper cut but Jaiswal is there at third man! It falls just short and they take a single.
FOUR! Carey swings at a ball that goes down leg and just clips it away to fine leg.
That brings up the 50 runs for Australia. Wow.
FOUR! Lovely shot from Carey, just a little upper cut to the now-vacant third man region. Was Carey limping a bit there? Hmmm, might be one to keep an eye on...
Carey is in good form, it should be said, with two centuries already this Shield season - one of the rare players to have suited up for their state.
A dot ends the over - thanks to some great fielding from Bumrah.
Attendance: 31,302
That is a record for an opening day at Perth Stadium. Lovely.
Who do we think has enjoyed themselves more?
23rd over - Siraj will carry on
Carey on strike, he tries to carve Siraj through the off side but it's too close to cut and the ball trickles down the pitch in front of him.
Carey can't get the next one away either.
BIG SWING FROM CAREY! He goes down on one knee almost to heave at that one, but misses everything. Virat Kohli is up and about behind the stumps.
Carey now tries to have a swing at a high ball outside off, again misses out on getting an edge on it and, again, Kohli is up and about.
ANOTHER PLAY AND MISS! Carey is playing with fire, he just can't get bat on anything.
Solid defence.
22nd over - Bumrah carries on
Alex Carey is on strike, Pat Cummins is at the non-strikers end.
Carey leaves the first down the leg side.
Carey clips to mid on, but there is no run there, the fielder is in quite close to act as a catcher to one that Carey mistimes.
Carey punches the ball to mid off now - again there's no run.
Carey defends now.
Carey is rapped on the pads, but the angle of Bumrah from around the wicket was taking that well down the leg side. Carey wants a run but Cummins sends him back.
Off the inside edge as Carey slashes at one - they take a single though.
LBW! MARNUS IS OUT!
After so much patience, so much grit.
Marnus Labuschagne is out.
But he has reviewed it.
Looks pretty out to me upon first viewing.
Hitting in line, hitting leg stump, Richard Kettleborough is spot on having raised his finger and Australia are 6-47!
Maruns' 2 came from 52 balls at a strike rate of 3.84...
21st over - Siraj continues
FOUR! Glorious shot there from Alex Carey, cutting perfectly through cover point with a slashing drive. Brilliant shot to a wider ball.
Closer to him this time, Carey cuts forward of square fora single to move to 8 off 11.
Marnus leaves outside off.
Now he defends.
Marnus has faced 50 balls now for 2 runs - his lowest return from 50 balls in his Test career so far.
Marnus defends another ball angled towards his stumps.
20th over - Jasprit Bumrah returns
In strolls Bumrah, with Marnus defending a ball that's angling into his stumps.
Marnus lets the next one go outside off.
Marnus defends solidly to the third ball.
Outside off, left alone by the patient Marnus Labuschagne.
Bumrah has a bit of a conflab with Virat Kohli - I wonder if he'll bring up the dropped catch of Marnus 44 deliveries and two runs ago?
Marnus defends the last couple to end another maiden.
Only three players have faced more balls than Marnus in this Test. Only four of those who have batted have scored less than his two.
It's been some session
Just got home from work and my eyebrows still haven’t come down looking at the score. At least Perth looks magnificent.
- KB
All led by Jasprit Bumrah.
Speaking of which...
19th over - Siraj will continue
The entire square is now in shade.
Carey defends the first couple of balls that he faces from a fired up Siraj.
Siraj strays onto Carey's pads, who clips him into the leg side but there is no run there to short midwicket.
SWING AND A MISS! Alex Carey, what on earth was that. A wide ball, Carey threw everything at it, opening the shoulders, but misses getting anything on the ball.
Solid defence this time.
Carey pulls, but doesn't get all of it and the ball is fielded at square leg for no run.
18th - Rana rolls the arm over again
Bumrah is warming up.
Marnus defends into the on side. No run.
BEATEN! What a balL! Rana walks down the pitch and talks into Marnus' ear. It's a brilliant ball, angling away off the pitch and moving away from a very relieved Marnus.
Marnus fends to the on side, takes off for a rare single to square leg. It's his second run in 41 balls.
Carey blocks out a yorker.
Driven! Beautifully through the covers by Carey out into the vast expanse of grass square of the wicket. Solid shot, he gets three for it. Well played and a lovely shot to get off the mark.
Rana has this ball singing, moving away from Marnus off the seam, with the Queenslander leaving it well alone.
17th over - Siraj has one to bowl at Alex Carey
Giddy up Alex, this is going to be an examination.
He defends the first ball he faces nicely.
EDGED! WHAT A CATCH!
Or is it?
KL Rahul is off celebrating, chased by the entire Indian team, but the umpires want to have a little look.
Oh no... We're going to have another one of these...
Did the ball touch the grass? Did KL Rahul get his fingers under the ball?
He did! It's out! Marsh has to go!
A little bit of extra bounce.
Brilliant diving stop from KL Rahul, Marsh is out for 6 off 19 balls.
Australia are 5-38.
17th over - Siraj will keep coming
Solid defence from Marsh.
Fox Sports have just shown us that the inside edge that got Marsh a single in that last over actually hit his pad first... Would have been very close to being out... But there was no appeal.
Lovely, expansive drive from Marsh to cover but straight to the man there on the bounce. Good positive intent from Marsh though.
Siraj angles the ball back into Marsh, who defends it and then picks the ball up and tosses it back to Siraj. Ever the nice guy, Mitch Marsh.
Marsh leaves a tight one, all the Indian fielders groan.
