With a name like GhostBed Luxe, you already know you’re getting something special with this bed. It’s the brand’s most premium, all-foam mattress with a super accommodating feel and firmness. It’s also among one of the coolest beds we’ve ever tested -- no pun intended there; it’s actually a great choice for hot sleepers.  

I could go on and on about this bed -- and rest assured, I will, but if you’re looking at the GhostBed Luxe online, you may want to learn more about it from first-hand experience. Lucky for you, I’m a certified mattress expert, and I’ve been testing this particular bed for the past six years. In this review, I’ll break down everything you should know about this mattress so you can make a well-informed decision before adding it to your cart.  

First impressions of the GhostBed Luxe

The GhostBed Luxe arrived at our space with completely free shipping. It showed up in a tall cardboard box, and similar to any other bed-in-a-box, we dumped out the contents, ripped off the plastic and watched the bed inflate. Since it’s an all-foam mattress, we noticed it looked a little misshapen right out of the box, but it looked completely normal after giving it a full night to sit out on our foundation and expand. 

In the morning, it was finally time to test the bed out. Upon testing responsiveness, I noticed it was slightly slower to respond than a neutral bed but faster than a Tempur-Pedic mattress. The cover also felt noticeably cool to the touch. When I laid down on it, I immediately felt a nice balance of comfort. On my back, I felt plenty of support with enough cushion for my shoulders and hips when I turned to my sides. And that cooling cover is no joke.

What does the GhostBed Luxe mattress feel like?

Based on our testing, we’d classify the GhostBed Luxe to have a responsive memory foam feel. Its multiple memory foam layers provide the bed with a sink-in quality, but the other more responsive support and comfort layers in the bed balance it out with some bounce.

All things considered, this mattress feel is perfect for those of us who want a body-conforming sensation in our bed, but not too much of one. Denser memory foam options like Tempur-Pedic can be a bit overwhelming for some sleep styles, particularly combination sleepers who like to move around at night. A responsive memory foam mattress, like the GhostBed Luxe, is great if you want a pressure-relieving mattress that also moves with you at night. 

How firm is the GhostBed Luxe mattress?

This bed is right around a medium on our scale, give or take. It presents sleepers with equal parts pressure relief and support, making it versatile enough to work for all sleeper types. Regardless of whether you like to sleep on your back, sides, stomach, or some sequence of all three throughout the course of a night, you should be plenty accommodated by this option.

Getting a bed with a neutral firmness level like this is often a safe way to go, especially if you’re unsure as to how firm you want your bed to be. A medium firmness is pretty much the best of both comfort worlds, soft and firm at once. I personally sleep on a bed that’s around a medium, and I really enjoy the level of comfort it provides me with. This mattress is 13’’ thick and composed of the following materials:

1. On the bottom, you’ve got a thick layer of dense support foam. This gives the mattress its main support base.
2. Then you’ve got a responsive transition foam that adds some bounce to the mattress and acts as a buffer between the bed’s support and comfort layers.
3. Toward the top, the GhostBed Luxe has a layer of gel memory foam for comfort. This gives the bed its main sink-in, pressure-relieving feel.
4. Above that -- things start getting chilly. The brand’s Ghost Ice technology layer is right here, just beneath the bed’s quilted cover, which incorporates even more memory foam and cooling tech.

Motion isolation

This is an important thing to consider in your next mattress if you or your partner is an especially light sleeper. Sometimes, one person can wake up the other if they move around excessively or get up in the middle of the night. In that case, you’ll want a bed that deadens motion well. Since memory foam beds usually perform the best in this category, the GhostBed Luxe absorbs a nice amount of cross-mattress movement. I highly doubt you’ll be jostling anyone awake on this particular bed anytime soon.

Edge-to-edge support

Being a more premium style of all-foam mattress, we’d say the GhostBed Luxe has good edge support. When you apply your weight to the bed’s perimeter, its support and various comfort foams help keep you placed firmly along those edges. If edge support is a key consideration for you or your partner, I’d look into a hybrid mattress that has reinforced coils along the edges instead of just foam. Still, you shouldn’t feel like you’re about to fall off the mattress at any point.

Temperature

Unlike the average, all-foam mattress that usually sleeps temperature neutral, we’d say all the cooling features in the GhostBed Luxe should definitely help to cool you down considerably at night. By default, we’d classify this as an active-cooling bed, but your bedding could impact the bed's overall cooling capabilities. Durability

The GhostBed Luxe should be durable enough to last average body types for at least the next seven to 10 years, if not longer. When it comes to online mattress durability, we usually say that hybrid beds with support coils beat out all-foam support bases in the long run -- foam degrades a bit faster than steel coils over time. That said, compared to your average foam bed, this mattress certainly has a more premium design, which should help to reduce long-term durability issues.      

Who is the GhostBed Luxe mattress best for?

While this premium, cooling mattress checks a lot of boxes for many sleepers out there, it still might not be the most suitable for everyone. That said, here’s who we think it’ll work best for.

Sleeping position

Combination sleepers who switch between different positions at night will likely get the most out of the GhostBed Luxe. Its medium firmness profile is supportive enough for back and stomach sleepers while being pressure-relieving enough to accommodate most side sleepers. All sleeper types should work out fine on this mattress.

When it comes to more specific sleeping preferences, that’s where things get a bit tricky. If you want an ultra-firm or soft mattress, this isn’t necessarily going to be the bed of your dreams. Also, you should probably enjoy the sensation of a memory foam mattress before jumping onto this one. Body type

This mattress is best for supporting average to petite-sized individuals. Heavier people could get by on this style of premium all-foam bed, but if you’re much heavier, you’ll probably prefer sleeping on a hybrid mattress with coils. GhostBed also goes above and beyond with its policy set. The Luxe mattress ships for completely free in a box, and once it’s in your possession, you get a 101-night trial period to try it at home risk-free. If you happen not to like it within that time frame, you can return it for free and get a full refund. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you’re backed by a 25-year warranty. Just be sure to use the right foundation for the bed. Otherwise, you could void your bed’s warranty.

How does GhostBed Luxe compare with other mattresses? 

GhostBed Luxe vs. GhostBed Classic

There’s a lot to unpack when comparing two of the most popular choices from GhostBed. Both are all-foam mattresses from a reputable brand, and both range around a medium firmness, give or take. Between the two, there are noticeable differences when it comes to feel, construction and price. The GhostBed Classic has a mixed foam feel, while the Luxe presents more of a responsive memory foam feel. The Luxe is also the more enhanced offering, with more memory foam layers and active-cooling features. The Luxe also has a slightly better warranty than the Classic, but it’s much more expensive.

GhostBed Luxe vs. Loom & Leaf

This comparison is a bit more difficult to make, considering that these are both premium memory foam mattresses within the online space. Both incorporate cooling features but do so in separate ways. The Loom & Leaf by Saatva has a laminated cooling strip within the center third of the bed, which helps to draw away your bodily heat at night as you rest. The GhostBed Luxe goes even further with its cooling by having a cooling comfort layer and cooling cover. Both have a responsive memory foam feel, but the Loom & Leaf is available in two firmness levels rather than just one. Even though both are on the more expensive side, you’ll be saving quite a bit more money by going the route of the GhostBed Classic, especially after a discount. 

The final verdict

I’m a big fan of this mattress. I’d highly recommend it to anyone searching for a more premium style of all-foam bed with a responsive memory foam feel. Also, if you like the sound of that medium firmness profile and all those noticeable cooling features, you can’t really go wrong with the GhostBed Luxe.
