"What is FGM? "is the second part of the "Too Much Pain -- The Voices of Refugee Women" series on female genital mutilation (FGM) and asylum, produced by the UN Refugee Agency (http://www.unhcr.org/).
A refugee woman talks about her experience of being subjected to FGM, the way it is practised, and why re-excision is done.
This part also explains the variety of FGM practices and where this is practised. A doctor discusses the medicalization of FGM. All forms of FGM violate the human rights of women and girls and are a form of gender-based persecution.
The 6-part video series "Too Much Pain -- The Voices of Refugee Women" tells the stories of refugee women who have undergone FGM and are engaged to end this practice. These women explain their experiences of flight, asylum and integration in the EU.
It can be used as a training tool on FGM in the asylum system, and to raise awareness on FGM and asylum in wider audiences.
The video series complements the UNHCR publication "Too Much Pain: Female Genital Mutilation & Asylum in the European Union - A Statistical Overview" (http://www.unhcr.org/531880249.pdf), updated in March 2014.
