Nominations for the 2014 Australian Human Rights Awards have been extended for an extra two weeks.
The closing date for nominations is now Friday 26 September 2014.
Australian Human Rights Commission President Gillian Triggs encouraged individuals and organisations to help set a new record for the number of nominations received.
I'm Gillian Triggs the President of the Human Rights Commission and it's that time of the year - again! We're coming up to the national awards for recognising those who've made a contribution to human rights in Australia. We're going to hold the event at Circular Quay here in Sydney at the Museum of Contemporary Art. And we are looking for you to help us find those national heroes for human rights. Our offices are here in Pitt Street in Sydney we don't know what's going on around Australia - in small towns, provincial cities and outlying parts of Australia. And we're relying on you to tell us who your human rights heroes are. We'd like to hear about those who you think in your community have made a contribution that perhaps is very quiet, very unassuming but nonetheless that you think has made a contribution. We've got all sorts of categories - a Youth category, Community Organisations, or Community Individual. We've got Literature awards, Media, Print, Television, Business -- if there's a business that you think has made a big contribution to human rights in your community let us know about it. Or if you think that you've made a great contribution don't be shy - fill out a form or ring us here at the Australian Human Rights Commission and we'd be really pleased to receive your nomination. So I look forward to meeting you if you join us at the end of the year on the 10th December to celebrate the United Nations Human Rights Day. Thank you.
