The career span of a pro-athlete can sometimes be limited. When Kim Yao, a professional volleyball player from China retired in her early 20’s, she found new ways to channel the invaluable skills she learnt to become a national champion. In her transition from a pro-athlete career, Kim became part of China’s “Champions Fund” that was set-up to give opportunities for ex-champions to use their skills and knowledge to benefit the wider community. It was this program that put Kim in touch with the ANZ Junior Tennis Program, run by the non-profit organisation Sports For All.
Kim found that she possessed many transferrable skills that could be applied to her role as a tennis coach such as a strong mental focus, positive attitude and perseverance. The ANZ Junior Tennis Program teaches school children technical tennis skills, teamwork, and independence and this in conjunction with Kim’s knowledge, enables ANZ to continue the support and inspiration for future tennis champions across the APAC region.
