Scientist Professor Lyn Beazley AO, Australian of the Year 2015 for Western Australia, shares the story behind a small brooch and carved pearl oyster shell on show at the National Museum of Australia. Lyn is a scientist who has dedicated more than 30 years to the field of neuroscience, researching recovery from brain damage and changing clinical practice in the treatment of infants at risk from pre-term delivery. Lyn chose the crab brooch and pearl shell for the Australian of the Year exhibition because it helps illustrate her love of science, the need to protect our marine environment and the happy coincidence that her work on repairing the brain after injury could be applied to the production of better pearls.
