MEDIA RELEASE | Pursuit for Gold initiative launched in Melbourne
Cycling Australia has partnered with the Australian Sports Foundation to provide a unique opportunity for investors to support the Australian Cycling Team as they strive for glory at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The Pursuit for Gold initiative will see funds go towards assisting the Australian Cycling Team in the areas of preparation and performance, technology and sports science innovation.
"Cycling Australia’s objective is to be the number one cycling nation in the world and our immediate challenge is to increase our medal tally at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games," said Cycling Australia President Malcolm Speed.
"To deliver this outcome we require further investment in our High Performance Unit that will provide our team with
world-leading technology, support and equipment.
The Australian Olympic Cycling Team boasts a long and proud history as one of the world’s most successful Olympic competitors.
At the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, Australian cyclists dominated, winning six gold and 11 medals overall, more than double that of the nearest rivals.
The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games saw the emergence of Great Britain as the world’s foremost cycling nation, something that was reinforced at the London 2012 Games where Britain’s 12 medals, eight of which were gold, doubled Australia’s tally of six.
The Pursuit for Gold initiative aims to ensure that Australia retains in place as the #1 cycling nation in the world, with the first step in achieving this goal is to compete successfully in Rio.
"We are responsible for the most powerful asset in Australian Cycling - the Australian Cycling Team - that competes on the world stage in Olympic Games, World Championships and other elite events," added Speed.
"We need to maximise the impact of that asset, to make Australians aware of our stars, to have them take pride in their team and to celebrate their great achievements.
"However cycling’s current investment in high performance is significantly less than our rivals and we cannot rely solely on government funds to bring us to a level playing field.
"Investment in these areas will give us the identified resources necessary to regain our winning edge on the world stage, boosting our medal prospects in Rio and beyond," said Speed.
Cycling Australia has partnered with the Australian Sports Foundation to ensure that all donations are tax-deductible.
Investment in the Australian Cycling Team will be directed to the following areas:
Athlete Preparation (increased international and domestic racing and training opportunities)
Technology (access to world-leading innovation and equipment)
Sports Science Innovation (develop our analytical tools to measure and report on athlete performance).
