In Kempsey, a mid north coast town in New South Wales, a stimulating and dynamic way of conveying Aboriginal history and contact is at the core of a Year 7 Aboriginal Studies excursion. Local Aboriginal elders share their expertise in the areas of food plant identification, killer boomerang throwing, gum leaf playing and bird call identification.
One of the most astonishing scenes is one in which the children play a ‘game’ to convey the concept of massacre. The young people also listen to stories told by Elders, about their lives as young people, living on reserves and missions or as survivors of the Stolen Generation, having been taken away as children.
Through negotiation and collaboration between educational agencies and Aboriginal organisations the excursion aims to improve the understanding of youth about their regional Aboriginal history and culture.
