This video explains and examines the various shots that make up a film in detail: everything from the ECU (Extreme Close Up) to the EWS (Extreme Wide Shot) – and the best way to frame each shot – the rule of thirds, dealing with height and width, head room, nose room lead room, balanced and unbalanced, dynamic and passive. Using the short film “Lucy” as a case study, the video also examines the choice of shot size in telling the story visually and the importance of understanding when to use each shot and what each shot size, framing and angle (high angle, low angle, canted, etc) means to the story overall (e.g. establishing shots, point of view shots, etc).
