Some are now calling for the World Cup to be played during the winter months when the weather in Qatar is more suitable for a football match. However, this idea has drawn criticism because it would cause disruption to domestic league competitions in European countries such as Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France. In 2010, Qatar defeated bids from South Korea, Japan, Australia and the United States to win the right to host the football tournament for the first time.
