The GFC refugee story – that of the once pampered forced to forge a new life sans luxury items and social status. For the Roses, whose fortune was built on the shaky foundations of the video rental industry, the new normal is a motel in a redneck town that Papa Rose (creator Eugene Levy) once bought as a joke. The humour comes from the exceptionally well-drawn characters, not the least of whom are the bemused locals.

Series return **** four stars
11.30pm, SBS
One of the many engrossing detective series courtesy of the Scandi-noir craze, this Swedish masterpiece based on Anne Holt's novels makes a bold return with a central plot line that would make any leader of the free world shake in their stilettos. The domestic narrative that is afforded just as much dramatic weight is equally engrossing. The pregnancy of criminal profiler Inger Johanne Vik (Melinda Kinnaman) adds another layer of danger.
