Four years after launching Deliveroo in Australia, Levi Aron is calling it quits.

The ridesharing delivery app announced in a statement to the press that Aron has “made a decision to leave the company and pursue external opportunities”. Business Insider Australia has sought further information about his next steps.

Aron joined Deliveroo in the months before the Australian launch in November 2015 and has overseen what the company reckons is pretty impressive penetration into the market. The statement confirming Aron’s departure references “independent research” by Capital Economics which indicated Deliveroo has fueled the creation of 8,000 jobs in the hospitality sector and helped add $452 million in revenue in the Australian economy.

He leaves the company with 11,000 restaurants on the platform and 8,000 drivers on the books and has seen Deliveroo outlast competitor Foodora, who packed up and left in August 2018 amid a host of tax problems.

Prior to heading up Deliveroo in Australia, he worked with a number of Melbourne-based retail tech start-ups including Catch of the Day and Yumtable, according to LinkedIn.

A search is currently underway for a permanent replacement as Deliveroo’s country head in Australia, but in the meantime Aron’s boss Merten Wulfert, who runs Deliveroo in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East, will oversee the Aussie operations.

Deliveroo has also announced that Greg Ellis, a former CEO of the News Corp-owned REA Group — which runs realestate.com.au — will join the delivery app as a senior adviser.

“After launching Deliveroo in Australia and growing the business over the past four years, it’s exciting to have Greg Ellis and Merten Wulfert take the reins to lead the business into its next phase of growth,” Aron told Business Insider Australia in a written statement.

“I am immensely proud of what we have been able to achieve in Australia over such a short amount of time. The decision to move on from Deliveroo has been a difficult decision, but one that I have thought long and hard about, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

The departure follows recent deals inked with green packing companies Returnr and Biopak as part of a push towards offering sustainable options on the app.
