Be warned though, the picture might suffer if your old HDMI cables aren’t up to the job. Switching to the cable Fetch includes in the box saw Dolby Vision kick in on my LG OLED.

Amazon’s Fire TV 4K.

Amazon’s Fire TV 4K.

The Mini 4K also steps up to Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6 for smoother streaming, assuming your home broadband connection is up to the task.

The Fetch TV Mini 4K is perfect for some lounge rooms, but unfortunately it still lacks a few of the newer popular streaming services like Disney+ and Apple TV+. If that's a deal-breaker, there are a few other options.

The $249 Apple TV 4K offers pretty much every video service, and many mobile apps can stream to it from an Apple device via AirPlay.

Then there’s the $99 Chromecast with Google TV, a dongle that feels more like a set-top box thanks to onscreen apps and a physical remote. Like the Apple TV, you’ll find Amazon, Apple, Disney, Netflix and Stan’s streaming services, along with Optus Sport, Kayo and Binge, and again many mobile apps can fling video to it via Google’s Cast.

Then there’s a new contender, with Amazon finally bringing its $99 Fire TV 4K dongle and voice-enabled remote to Australia, rather than expecting us to make do with the Fire TV Lite. Like all the others, it supports regular HDR and Dolby Vision.

The Fire TV 4K is user-friendly, with the ability to create profiles for everyone in the house so they get their own home screen, watchlist and recommendations. Unfortunately it’s missing a few Australian apps like Kayo and Binge. There’s also no Amazon equivalent to Cast or AirPlay for streaming video from mobile devices.

While the Fire TV 4K is slick, it's hard to recommend it over its rivals unless you've already pledged your allegiance to Amazon's Echo speakers and Alexa smart assistant.
