Cronulla has stood down five-eighth Braydon Trindall from the NRL after he allegedly failed roadside illicit drugs and alcohol tests.

The Sharks said in a statement Trindall had been charged with failing the Monday morning tests, less than 24 hours after their round-seven win over North Queensland.

Cronulla said Trindall, who is expected to front court next month, immediately informed the club.

He is awaiting a secondary sample of his drugs test.

"The club has since followed the appropriate protocols within the player's contract and (collective bargaining agreement) and continues to work with the NRL integrity unit," the Sharks said in a statement.

"The club, player and his management agree it is in Braydon's best interest to not participate in games or to train for the short term, most importantly to attend to his welfare and health issues."

Cronulla face Canberra on Sunday, with Trindall's place in the side likely to be taken by Daniel Atkinson.
