Melbourne Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen is facing more time on the sidelines after limping from the field during his side's thrilling 20-22 victory against Gold Coast at Robina on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old clutched at his right ankle after making a tackle late in the first half against the Titans and was unable to bear any weight on it as he limped into the sheds.

The injury affected the same ankle he broke in week one of the finals against Brisbane last year.

Papenhuyzen played no further part in the match, and was later shown wearing a moon boot and on crutches at half time.

"We're not quite sure how bad it is," Storm coach Craig Bellamy told reporters after the game.

"We're not sure if it's something to do with the plate or above it. They'll need to see the scans first before they make any predictions."

Papenhuyzen appeared to be at his very best on the Gold Coast, setting up two tries and scoring another in a blistering first half before the incident.

The 2020 Premiership winner had previously missed 13 months of his luckless career with a shattered kneecap.

"I don't know how much bad luck you can have," Bellamy said.

"We need to find out what's wrong and go from there."

The Storm led 20-6 shortly before the half-time break but were pegged back by a stunning Titans resurgence in the second period.

Titans fullback AJ Brimson excelled as the hosts drew level at 20-20 with just over half-an-hour remaining.

Despite seeing Storm goalkicker Nick Meaney hit the post with one penalty attempt with 15 minutes remaining, but landed his second from the same spot a couple of minutes later.

As the Titans pressed for the go-ahead score, the hosts had a tough call go against them at the death when winger Jojo Fifita was ruled to have made a strip in a tackle as the visitors hung on.

"You are going to probably ask about the contentious calls," Gold Coast coach Des Hasler said.

You get some and you lose some. The ones you lose are always the hardest.

"We could talk for half a day about the strip at the end but that doesn't help.

"It was disappointing we gave away some soft tries in the first half but showed plenty of character to come back."

In Saturday's late game, Kodi Nikorima launched the Dolphins back into the NRL's top four, after the Dolphins outgunned North Queensland 28-26 in an old-fashioned Townsville shootout.

The Cowboys and Dolphins scored 10 tries between them as the lead changed hands five times in a thrilling contest.

The result consigned the Cowboys to a fourth straight loss, with defence continuing to be a problem for a team that has no issue scoring points.

After tries came thick and fast — at the rate of one every six minutes in the first 50 minutes — the game tightened up late with the score locked at 22-22.

The win did come at a cost for the Dolphins, with Niu suffering a serious-looking ankle injury and Felise Kaufusi going on report for a high shot.

Earlier, Canterbury-Bankstown powered past Wests Tigers in a fiery contest that saw two Tigers players sin-binned late.

Tigers coach Benji Marshall lamented his sides' poor discipline as the Bulldogs powered to a 22-14 victory at the Olympic stadium, despite the Tigers leading 14-6 at half time.

Prop David Klemmer went to the sin bin for dissent, with Alex Seyfarth following him after appearing to headbutt famously chirpy Bulldogs hooker Reed Mahoney during the fracas that ensued.

The scenes frustrated Marshall as the Tigers slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat.

"You've got to have discipline," Marshall said.

"We're eight points down, we're still a chance in the game. To lose two players and play with 11 for the last seven or eight minutes, that's not us."

Titans could talk about decisions 'for half a day'

On the other side of the ledger, home side the Titans will feel very hard done by after a tough call went against them at the end of a thrilling contest.

Winger Jojo Fifita was ruled to have made a strip in a tackle in the closing minutes to hand the Storm the chance to see out the game.

"You are going to probably ask about the contentious calls," Gold Coast coach Des Hasler said.

"You get some and you lose some. The ones you lose are always the hardest.

"We could talk for half a day about the strip at the end but that doesn't help.

"It was disappointing we gave away some soft tries in the first half but showed plenty of character to come back."

Back to the Gold Coast for a minute, where Craig Bellamy has been speaking about the injury suffered by fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen.

Papenhuyzen clutched at his right ankle after making a tackle on AJ Brimson late in the first half.

It was the same one he broke in week one of the finals against Brisbane last year.

The fullback had previously missed 13 months with a shattered kneecap.

"We're not quite sure how bad it is," Storm coach Craig Bellamy said.

"We're not sure if it's something to do with the plate or above it. They'll need to see the scans first before they make any predictions.

"I don't know how much bad luck you can have. We need to find out what's wrong and go from there."

The 25-year-old was in a moon boot and on crutches at fulltime after setting up two tries and scoring one of his own.

Dolphins win a thriller to move into the NRL top four

(Getty Images)

What a game.

There were so many swings of momentum, so many wonderful tries and so much entertainment in the tropical north.

Both teams have played a blinder there - neither giving an inch in a genuine shootout that turned into a bloody slog in the heat during a brutal second half.

Kodi Nikorima has to be the standout, with four try assists to see his side over the line.

The Cowboys will rue their missed opportunities as they fall to a fourth successive defeat.

80' Drinkwater misses a two-point field goal!

The Cowboys went 60 metres in three tackles!

The home crowd will say they should have had a penalty for offside — they might have been right.

But it was not given.

Drinkwater went for a long-range field goal but it fell just short.

79' HOLMES MISSES THE KICK!

The Dolphins still lead! The ball never came back enough for Holmes and that could be so, so costly with just 90 seconds remaining.

It's 28-26!

78' THE COWBOYS SCORE AGAIN!

AND HAVE THE CHANCE TO LEVEL THINGS UP!

Feldt came within a couple of inches in the corner on the third tackles.

In the next play though the ball pops up nicely for Jeremiah Nanai to score his sixth career double.

Val Holmes has a chance to level the scores from the sideline.

75' Another Dolphins error

And it could be costly.

Trai Fuller drops yet another high bomb - is that the fourth of the match so far from the fullback?

Regardless, it gives the Cowboys brilliant field position - and the crowd are really up and about as the clock ticks inexorably towards the conclusion of what has been a thrilling contest.

71' Now Kaufusi gets his turnover!

BOSH! Another powerful hit from the massive Dolphins forward does force the turnover this time, Jeremiah Nanai it was who coughs it up.

Only then Jesse Bromwich loses the ball in the next set.

It's all happening out there.

70' Felise Kaufisi smashes Val Holmes for a turnover!

Or does he?

What a challenge from the Cowboys - it looked a brilliant tackle from Kaufusi on the Cowboys 20 metre line, but Holmes had actually passed the ball already and it's a knock on by Kaufusi.

A let off for the Cowboys? It was a matter of half a second in it.

68' The Dolphins hit the front!

It's the visitors who score the all important next try!

Kodi Nikorima switched play after the Dolphins initially looked left on the last tackle 10 metres out from the line.

His kick through was perfect for Jake Averillo to sprint through and dot down under pressure.

Massive score for the Dolphins and in the context of this second half.

A fourth assist of the game for Nikorima too - the most he's had in a game in his NRL career.

Jamayne Isaako kicks the extras and there's a try in it.

Dolphins lead 28-22.

The pace has been high

63' Cowboys denied a try for a knockon

A maniacal, frantic, brutal period of rugby league has ended in a try to the Cowboys.

Or has it?

Scott Drinkwater has dotted down, taking Kodi Nikorima with him to score.

But did the ball touch Jake Clifford? Yes it did and that makes it a knock on.

But were all the Dolphins players offside as that play took place?

There's a lot happening out there - and there's still so much more to come, 17 minutes left in this enthralling slugfest.

58' Errors bring a halt to the scoring

Both teams are starting to feel the pace a little bit now - there are gaps opening up but errors are costing both sides any chance at breaking through.

The next score feels like it will be really, really important in this game.

49' Isaako has a hattrick

That is absolutely sensational from the Dolphins! Wonderful hands and lovely running lines as they attack down the right side.

Nikorima does really well to spin out of a tackle and find Jake Averillo, who sped to the sideline and passed back inside to Jamayne Isaako, who completes his hattrick.

That really was fantastic ball movement from the Dolphins.

Isaako has a chance to put the Dolphins ahead - but he misses.

It's 22-22.

46' Dolphins lose Tesi Niu to injury

Tesi Niu just saw his studs get caught in the surface as he was tackled over the sideline.

The Dolphins staff have tried to tape him up and see if he can carry on but I don't think he's going to be coming back any time soon, as he limps around the sideline.

42' Cowboys blow a chance

Trai Fuller bobbles another high bomb, popping the ball up really nicely for Viliami Vailea right on the tryline, but it's been knocked on and the Dolphins can breathe a sigh of relief.

It's been a cracker so far

We were expecting a close game and that's what we've got at at 1/2 time - go Cowboys.

- Mike

The second half is underway

And they've either had a fireworks display or it's got real foggy in Townsville during the half time break.
