In honour of Australia’s last-wicket pair putting on the largest partnership of the innings, a throwback to a couple of our more memorable tenth-wicket stands.
Mitch Starc took the long handle to South Africa right here in Perth alongside Nathan Lyon in 2012, bombing two massive sixes in a 43-ball 68 that mattered for absolutely nothing.
South Africa won by 309 runs in Ricky Ponting’s last Test, as Starc and Lyon put on 87, the highest partnership of Australia’s fourth-innings total of 322.
Then of course there was the calamitous all-out for 47 in Cape Town a year earlier. South Africa had the Aussies 9-21 before Peter Siddle and Lyon put on 55 per cent of the team’s runs.
Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla promptly showed the tourists how it’s done, plundering hundreds at 4.5 an over and romping to an eight-wicket win.
