Catalina restaurant in Rose Bay has once again postponed its colourful New Year’s Day party that usually boasts a mixed crowd of socialites, business people and sports stars.

Brother and sister team James McMahon and Kate Dalgairnso made the decision to hold off on the dance event for the second year in a row and will instead host a $300-a-head lunch and entertainment package.

“I know personally with our customers are still wary with COVID being around and restrictions being eased completely. With the ever-moving pin from the government we just don’t know what could happen,” Ms Dalgairnso said.

“I anticipate doing the big party again next year but we’re leaning into the dining aspect which is what we do best,” said Mr McMahon.

Restaurateur and fashion designer Maurice Terzini, the founder of Bondi Icebergs and creator of its famed NYD bash, will proceed with his party, which is now in its 19th year. The Icebergs New Year’s Day soiree has previously lured big names like Heath Ledger, Owen Wilson, Paris Hilton and Jamiroquai.

“We’ve had a great response and everyone is really pumped for the party to return, we’ve all had a rough year so it’s a day to look forward to,” Terzini said.

“Given the events, these past two years, our New Year’s Day party will give back a little bit of faith and energy, socialising together and enjoying life, even if it’s for one day.”
